The hat I don’t want.
If anybody knows where I can buy a Titfer like old Basils, then please post a link here!
You are rare now-a-days.My ID shot, left, shows what I wear when the temp drops into the teens. For rain and sun, it's a custom made, beaver, no rabbit, wide brimmed, really worn (30 years old) cowboy hat. I'm never without a hat.
PS
Never wear my hat in a house and always remove it when speaking to a lady, grocery clerk, bank teller, and so forth. My daddy raised me better than that that. Now I see men wearing hats in church, restaurants. and so forth. Sad!
It's akin to remaining seated when a lady is standing other than a restaurant staff and such. Who the hell raised these boys?
Similar taste, this is the style I'm looking at. Most likely wool as opposed to wool felt but not certain yet. Either way, I like the look!View attachment 282595

I have a couple and love them, but as we get into freezing and below they really aren't all that warm. This might get you going in the right direction. The Irish Walking Hat.

A "stampede string" will eliminate that problem.Any hat was a problem though due to wind.
In my opinion as a very long time rancher from Colorado, if the hat fits, a string is very seldom needed. A hat should fit snug not just perched on your head.A "stampede string" will eliminate that problem.
I had something like that, but standing on the fly bridge, running 12 knots into headwind had a "garrote by drogue" effect. In the end I just let my hair grow out and burn blonde.A "stampede string" will eliminate that problem.
Yup! But, when it's needed ... it's needed. Or, you can pull the brim over your ears and secure it with your neckerchief on a cold, blustery day. Helps keep the ears warm also. A wide brimmed hat is damned versatile, much more than a sunshade, rain hat and such.if the hat fits, a string is very seldom needed
I'd wanted it for sun protection as one of our two dive boats didn't have a top. Or rather, the bimini blew off, was never recovered, and the shop owner was annoyed enough by this to not replace it for a very long time.Yup! But, when it's needed ... it's needed. Edit: I should say, I love it because you can crush it into a fist sized ball, secure it with a rubber band and throw it in a bag and it will pop right back into shape when you need it.
