Similar taste, this is the style I'm looking at. Most likely wool as opposed to wool felt but not certain yet. Either way, I like the look!

In my opinion as a very long time rancher from Colorado, if the hat fits, a string is very seldom needed. A hat should fit snug not just perched on your head.
I had something like that, but standing on the fly bridge, running 12 knots into headwind had a "garrote by drogue" effect. In the end I just let my hair grow out and burn blonde.

I may have found my perfect outdoors hat... I have a fondness for scally caps and my good friend got me a Boston Scally Cap with ear flaps on it as a Christmas gift. Had to exchange it for the correct size, but I love it.
Quilted all the way around. Ears tuck up well. Fits perfectly. Wore it to church this morning. Also great for sitting inside while it snows!

Yup! But, when it's needed ... it's needed. Or, you can pull the brim over your ears and secure it with your neckerchief on a cold, blustery day. Helps keep the ears warm also. A wide brimmed hat is damned versatile, much more than a sunshade, rain hat and such.
I'd wanted it for sun protection as one of our two dive boats didn't have a top. Or rather, the bimini blew off, was never recovered, and the shop owner was annoyed enough by this to not replace it for a very long time.
It would get salt water mist on it most days. When I'd get home, I'd rinse it off in the shower and store it in the gas oven overnight where the heat from the pilot light was just enough to have it bone dry by morning.

I'm envious in that I have never been a hat guy; it's just not a good look on me, with any kind of hat. I always look like a dork trying to wear a hat, which is a notch down from my usual just looking like a dork.
If you can find one, an original Jones hunting cap would be ideal. Mine is made of tan canvas, is lined with black and white check wool material, and has an integral ear flap that can be folded up into the cap when not needed.
Edit: I should say, I love it because you can crush it into a fist sized ball, secure it with a rubber band and throw it in a bag and it will pop right back into shape when you need it.
