Harris is an extreme and outrageous kind of guy.
Seriously though, the stuff is only going to improve with age. Plus, if you want it to last 20 or 30 years you need to have some inventory. As everyone says, it ain't going to get any cheaper than it is today.
However, I can't condone Harris' blatant tobacco hoarding. He is sick, and he needs our love and support to get through these difficult times.

peck, of all the people to talk about cellaring, you should never open your pie hole. You have more than twice what I have with your 414 pounds and counting. My cellar is a pittance in comparison to yours. When I grow up, I want to have your cellar and pipe collection, then I will know I have arrived. lol

If anyone wants to see the biggest cellar in North America, it is right here.

At our pipe club meeting last Friday night, I supplied a 1999 tin of the Capstan Brown label. We opened it and it was still moist. The tin aroma was heavenly and it smoked just as good. All 7 of us thought it was one of the best tobaccos we had ever smoked.
Cellar it guys.

pecck, I just looked at your cellar again, you must have 140 or so different blends in there, that is amazing. I think I have about 27 different ones now.

Ouch!
I don't know how many blends, but there are only 36 blends that I have 3 lbs or more of. Many blends are in small quantity. I like variety.

I don't mean to either goad nor squelch the hoarders, but I personally know several pipesters who have cellars that are many times the sizes documented here. The reported rates of TADs here are at such a rate that they will never catch up.

Les, I know there are guys who have been cellaring for decades and probably have over a thousands pounds or more. I have heard you are one of those guys. Where the hell do you keep it all, and do you think you can smoke it all in your lifetime?

Well after reading all of these posts now I'm going to have to order a tin or two to try this flake. I wasn't going to bother as I still have difficulty in packing and keeping flakes lit (I swear I've regressed over the last month) but the review on here are making my TAD monster flare up. I was going to try the ready-rubbed but now maybe I shouldn't bother and just get the flake. Or maybe both........crap, more TAD!!!!

Brian, are you cube cutting the flakes? Are you making sure they are properly dry( the Capstan Blue and Gold Flakes need no drying) and are you packing them tight enough? When you are done packing, check the draw and make sure you have some good resistance. I would go with the Blue Flake, it is definitely the better of the two. When I pack, I fill the bowl and then lightly press it down making sure I am pressing it along the sides as well. Fill it again adding a little more pressure, fill it again with more pressure. Check the draw and if you do not have resistance, add more and really add pressure. Also are you dumping ash when you relight, that is important also. Let me know if you are still having trouble after trying these steps.

Just to add to this culmination of Capstan Blue experiences, I Just "finished" a half-bowl of this flake that I cube-cut. I say "finished" because I HAD to stop. I'm a Vitamin-N lightweight and sometimes my body has a horrible habit of reacting to it with the most bizarre blends. This one, as a flue-cured VA, by all rights should have little in the way of nicotine. But, good lord did it hit me. Here I am sipping away at this fine blend and WHAM! The room starts to twist. This shouldn't be happening, yet here I am, stumbling into the house and flopping on the couch. Will I stop smoking this? No. Nothing I've smoked that makes me woozy has ever turned me off to it. But I will surely be more careful ext time.
Whew! I feel it.

Me too Andrew, I have a nice tax return finally heading my way that should allow me to handle several things including a commission from Michael Parks and a pretty decent order of baccy.
Harris, I just did my first cube cut of Escudo (normally either fold and stuff or rub it out) but it was so hot and humid out I didn't get much flavour out of it. I'm going to try a few other of the flake blends I do have with cube cutting and I'll try packing it tighter to see how that works. I'm also going to ask one of the more experienced members at my pipe club to give me some pointers as I fill my bowl tomorrow, perhaps he'll be able to spot something. I don't care about relight as long as I'm getting the flavour I think I should be, but when we're talking about a dozen or more then it gets annoying. I honestly have gotten worse over the last month, my guess is over thinking it.

Brian, if you smoked it outside in really humid weather that will definitely have an affect on flavor. How long did you dry the Escudo before lighting up. Did you cube cut it then let it dry? A dozen relights is not good. When you do the initial light are you doing a good char then a really good true light? That first light should be able to hold you a good long time if you are doing it right. Also are you tamping while smoking?

Harris, I dried it for a good hour after cube cutting it, I tend to like my tobacco quite dry. I did have to walk in the house and noticed the flavour change almost instantly in the air conditioning. I think I'm getting a good char on the false light, the lighting process hasn't changed and I wasn't having these troubles in the past. I do tamp when I smoke, this is probably one of the things I'm least sure about, how often to tamp. I do empty the ash when I re-light generally, when I'm relighting as much as I have been recently I don't but normally I get about a quarter bowl before relighting, then I would dump the ash first.
Jason, good to know about the strength of this, I'll have to be very careful when trying it so as not to be praying to the porcelain gods after a full bowl!

Brian, sounds like you dried it enough. I lightly tamp when I feel the smoke volume get a tad low, or I will just cover the bowl with a couple of fingers take a couple of quick puffs and re ignite it that way. Smoking in extreme humidity is never easy and honestly I try to avoid it. That could be your major problem right there. Have you noticed this problem lately because it is summer and you are smoking in humidity. If you were not having these issues over the winter it is probably the problem.

rothnh,

No. I smoked on a somewhat empty stomach and was not indulging in a sugar-y drink when I smoked it. While it may seem like a rookie mistake, what it boils down to is I didn't expect this kind of reaction. I don't have issues with VA's when it comes to nicotine. At least not flue-cured. So it was rather surprising when it snuck up on me like that. Anyway, I know for next time.
