rick, I really think you will like this a lot. I have smoked this numerous times in many different pipes and it has always delivered a great smoke. I find myself reaching for it on a daily basis as one of my 4-5 bowls of the day.

As I have gone through a half dozen tins of Blue now, this stuff

is GOOD, really enjoy it as my 1st smoke of the day w/Black

coffee...starts the day out right for me
Cube cutting works best IMHO for this flake, it smokes

fantastic in my favorite Briar flake pipes and also

smokes great in a Meer, Clay & Cob as well

I am forced to agree, cube cutting appears to work best with Capstan Blue. I have tried it in several different pipes (I found it awful in a corncob) and with several packing methods. The cube cut brings out the flavors best, and eliminates any harshness. Fold and stuff initially tasted fantastic, but became somewhat rough midway through the bowl(s). Rubbed out, I found, muted the flavors, but resulted in a milder smoke for me.

An interesting note: I did not find that it tasted any different in a clay pipe than it does in briar. Typically, I taste more of the base tobacco's flavors in my clay pipes than the briars, which subtly subdue the intensity, due to the cake, I imagine. Cube cut Capstan Blue in intense on its own.

Im back and smoking my 5th bowl as we speak. I just took my new Mario Grandi cheery wood out of the box and lit up some blue flak in it. My god the difference. It has been good, but this pipe for some reason is hitting the ultra sweet taste with almost a honey style sweetness left on the lips right out of the box. It makes me happy too because I wanted this pipe to be my first devoted strictly to Virginia's. :D

On a second bowl in my Rad black blast billiard now. This is definitely my kind of tobacco!

Finally got mine in the mail today, and I ordered it within minutes of its release. It was my first order with SP, note to self- select a different shipping option next time. Pro Tip...

I tried Capstan over the weekend....loved it. Folded, stuffed into a pretty large dublin shape. Ordered more. Malty is a word used to describe it, and I think that's accurate. Currently smoking Three Nuns and.........meh. But the Capstan......yeah baby.

Wish I had read all the "its so-so" reviews before I ordered the Three Nuns. Could have bought something else. Plus I just hate having tobacco sitting around that I don't want to smoke....I've got probably 6 ounces worth of stuff I just don't want and probably can't give away.

I recd my order last week from sp.com. I have 2 tins each three nuns and capstan blue flake, along with 1 lb each of ps luxury bullseye flake, navy flake, twist flake, with 1oz of ps black cherry. iam sitting back 1 tin each for aging. I will order more of both three nuns and capstan tins for aging. I do wish that the three nuns had the perique instead of the ky,dark fired. however the three nuns is a decent smoke. I hope aging will improve the overall taste. thanks too all of you here who have commented on these old time tobacs.
take care.

With all this talk of Capstan on here and how great it is (also in everyone's cellar photos) I think I'm going to add a tin or two to my next order.

Haven't tried either yet. I bought a tin of Blue and Yellow flake along with a tin of Three Nuns and I'm aging them until the West Coast Pipe Show to share with friends. I do like a Virginia flake from time to time, but I am a bit of nicotine wimp. I'll be sure to have a snack on hand when trying them.

Just had my first bowl of Capstan Blue and I'm getting a radically different flavor profile, akin to a VaPer: spicy, a bit salty, with the sweetness of the VA subdued in the background. I'll have to smoke more of this, and in a variety of different pipes, before I'm ready to review. But interesting how differently my initial reaction is to most. That said, I really like it. It's excellent. But in blind tasting I would have picked this as LNF. I would be very surprised if there wasn't either a hint of Perique, or maybe some Kentucky blended in here.

sothron, what types of blends were you smoking in the pipe you used? It sounds almost like a ghost issue. I get no spice at all, creamy sweetness for me.

Harris: The pipe is used primarily for LBF. I was thinking same about the ghost issue. Though LBF is easy on the Perique.
Unfortunately, I am only recently getting into VA flakes and nearly all my pipes have a lot of VAPer time. Sounds like a good reason to buy a new pipe.....

I just revisited the Capstan yesterday, and I experienced the same thing as Sothron. I was smoking it in a Dublin that has seen nothing but Capstan Blue so far. So it wasn't ghosting. A lot of spice, but not the most spice I've seen in a blend. A nice sweetness came with it, but definately an unexpected spice. I didn't experience this before. I'm wondering if it's a result of the tim being open a few weeks.

sothron, LBF will definitely give it a spiciness that is not there, new pipe sounds like a good plan. lol
Sam, I keep all my open tins in a plastic tupperware like container that keeps them fresh for months. No tin I know of stored in the open will keep a blend fresh for more than a couple of weeks at best.
pipe, interesting you get a spiciness from it, must be your taste buds is all. As long as you enjoy it that is all that matters.
