Where is "here in the North"? I am in N. CA, not far N and E of SF. Plenty hot in summers here, sometimes too hot so that tomatoes don't set as well as they should. I suspect it's too dry here for optimum tobacco growth.

Some of my nightshade (tomatoes, hybrids and "heirloom") guys take most their nutrients in the top 6-8 inches, put can put down roots to a couple of feet. I was just thinking that you'll probably have a better yield next year as you build up the soil, add nutrients, etc to new raised beds.

Actually, tobacco does very well in depleted soils.

If the heat keeps your tomatoes from setting, water with a little Fish and Poo. You can get it commercially by many names, but it's just fish emulsion and guano mixed. I use it to get an early crop of tomatoes and squash for market.

Where is "here in the North"?

Atlantic Canada, a lot of people use greenhouses here for tomatoes. I grow tomatoes and peppers mostly in planters. I was thinking of a set-up that I could open on the hotter days. I know that tobacco is grown in southern Ontario and it can get hot there. A side note, I've heard that the northern most part of California is further north than the southern most part of Ontario, you wouldn't think so.

Thanks guys, but it's done, harvested, cured, twisted, sweated, and setting in jars for two years. I've sliced into a twist for a little tastey, and so far, I'm pleased. ::

You must be extremely proud! Now thst you've finished the process from start to finish, is there any further crops or experimentations with other types in the future??

I think that I just want to perfect my Virginia skills this year. Maybe I will try a Turkish plant or two, if the seeds germinate. The ones that I tried to germinate last year didn't set well.
