Where is "here in the North"? I am in N. CA, not far N and E of SF. Plenty hot in summers here, sometimes too hot so that tomatoes don't set as well as they should. I suspect it's too dry here for optimum tobacco growth.

Some of my nightshade (tomatoes, hybrids and "heirloom") guys take most their nutrients in the top 6-8 inches, put can put down roots to a couple of feet. I was just thinking that you'll probably have a better yield next year as you build up the soil, add nutrients, etc to new raised beds.
