I feel incredibly lucky two days in a row I've had the sublime smoke. My lumberman just got cleaned specifically the stem which had oxidized to the point of tasting terrible. Cleaned it off with magic erasers didn't go for a full polish, just get rid of that taste. Then I smoked some Yorktown that's almost a year old and every single aspect just went perfect. The pack was perfect. The smoke couldn't have been better in any way. Then today I smoked my Vauen with some Dark Twist that I jarred from the same order. Again everything about it was perfect. I picked up on nuances that I didn't even dream where in there in my wildest of dreams. It wasn't just technique either the weather was perfect chilled but not uncomfortable just mellow. Honestly it makes me feel like I should head down to Vegas or some other luck based activity.

I know what you're talking about. Of course most of my smokes are "good". If they weren't I would quit smoking but once in a while....... I get that sublime smoke where everything just falls into place perfectly. The pipe, the tobacco, the location, the mind set. That has happened to me with pipes and tobacco that I thought were "too low end to really have a sublime experience". Just like it's gone the opposite way with pipes and tobacco that I was convinced would give me a pipe/tobacco orgasm but just didn't because something was missing. For me it's usually the whole dynamics of the location, the time of day, how calm I am, the music, what I'm drinking...... so much is involved in that sublime smoke.

Strange enough, I had one of those this evening, and NOT at all expected, based on the following:
MM Marcus cob
Carter Hall
Bic, roofing nail...
Evan Williams, neat, in a copper mug...
Outside patio, no wind, 50 degree New England fall evening.
All of which is really just “plain vanilla” - low budget even...out for a short smoke.
BUT - I really NEVER smoke CH. Generally don’t consider myself a burly fan. I realize that for lots of folks, this is their all day, or every day combo. I think I finally get CH. Hopefully this can and will be recreated - often.
After about 25 years of pipe smoking, CH has entered. Wow...took that long to hit me.
Tonights combo was sublime...and it was nice.

That happens often. That amazing smoke. Then there are days like today. Had to go to a doc to drain sack of pus. Got three shots to numb the incision. Cut to open. Then antibiotic shot. Was told to pick up more antibiotic and take it. So I'm back home, sliced Gaslight with a newly sharpened Opinel No. 8. Sliced like butter. Load up one of my favorite Pete's 999. Went out to the nicely shaded back deck. 5 min into the smoke, upset stomach. Smoke itself was fine. The stars just didn't line up for me today.

Most pipe bowls are enjoyable. They range from not-so-good through extraordinary. Probably best when the expectations aren't way high and it just happens. The finest can be the extended big-pipe experiences or even the short sampler size smokes. Much is in frame of mind.
