Hmmm, seems over the last year I've become a less and less compatible member here.

One of the best most sublime smokes in my life was with crappy tobacco (backwoods original, aka Sutliff Cavendish goop) in a crappy pipe (one of my first homemade cobs). I was on a 12 hour road trip with the family from Alberta to BC, and my wife had invited my mother in law along, she was nonstop talking for several hours when we stopped for coffee, my wife, kids, and MIL went inside for snacks and I stayed in the parking lot and enjoyed a blissful 20 minutes of silent smoking. It was wonderful and because of it I keep on hand and enjoy an occasional Sutliff gooper to this day.

lately I've been using matches for at least the initial two lights. And man what a difference it makes. It won't cover bad form but it's certainly gives a great smoke that's easier to handle. Big pro on matches for starting the pipe.

I’m with you on that 100%. I wonder if the lower match temperature means that you’re less likely to scorch the tobacco during the initial lighting, which can leave a really bad taste in your mouth the rest of the way through the bowl. Of course, experienced smokers I’m sure have no problems using any type of lighting source without over charring the initial light.
