LOL, I make them out of antler, briar, Mammoth Ivory and human bone. Yes, opening a shop on Etsy at end of month.

I made this tamper a while back. I rusticated the body. The little tool is briar on the end. It slides into the end of tamper, has some tension so you can keep it out as far as needed for tamping or use it as a poker.

I think they’re cool art pieces, but I just use a horseshoe nail or my finger. I did forge a longer one out of a piece of rebar for especially deep bowls, but rarely use it.

I carve tampers out of random sticks when I'm smoking or watching the youtubes. I use them and lose them frequently and I've given away dozens but they keep accumulating again. Current unused ones:

I like the “footprint” of the tamper to be fairly small. I mostly tamp around the perimeter, right up against the chamber, so the ember ends up slightly cone-shaped. Seems like I have to relight a lot less when I do that. I think a .410 shell would be too big for me.

I like all the tampering being done but....human bones again? What is the link between pipe smoking and human bones, seriously it must be at least once a year this comes up ha.

I have a few custom tampers, but primarily use Brebbia nails (easy to misplace).

This is my most unique, a Peterson P-Lip. I don't use it much in public, after someone at a Boswells meet-up said it bared resemblance to something else.

Embarrassingly fancy (though I do hope in an understated way)--made by Eloi Pernet, a company now probably best known for making multi-purpose knives concealed in old French silver coins. Retailed by Dunhill and Hermes in the 1970s, with patience they can regularly found at very reasonable prices.
