I love anise...big Absinthe fan. Those out there messing around with your own blends should try splash Pernod or the less expense Herbsaint on your creations. Nice enhancement.

Mixture 79 in bulk? I missed that wrinkle. Now you can tack it onto an order for an ounce of 79 and amaze or disgust yourself accordingly. No plans to do so, but I think I'd try this before Capt. Black Grape. Just typing that makes me a little queasy, though I bet it has its fans. Back to my C&D Super Balkan, thanks.

Great blend. As you know, it is sold as "Penzance" in bulk. But tasty stuff -- worth exploring!

After all the horror stories I've read on 79, a bit surprised to now read people saying they like it. I've got to admit that during my early years of smoking nothing but OTC, Edgeworth, Sail, Amphora, even tried Paladin once (hack!), I don't think I ever tried 79. But then lots of folks hate the Lakelands while I've found some of them pretty intriguing. Can't believe I'm even considering giving 79 a try. In general I've been trying to move back away from aros after a recent fling, but some of them are actually pretty good and fill a certain flavor niche.

Buy an ounce, smoke it in a cob and see what you think. I like Lakelands too.

Anise is tasty. Of course, I grew up eating Italian cookies flavored with anise so I may be a bit biased. Something about anise really goes with and enhances tobacco for me.
@perdurabo: good tip for home blends

Never tried 79, heard they used to use extract from deer musk glands or something, whatever the reformulation I'm just not interested. Do like anise/licorice flavors to a degree though and smoke stuff I taste it in.
That Absinthe tip is nice, I actually do something similar with my leftovers. Once there's enough I grab a few ounces and splash a shot worth of Absinthe, sometimes with a little menthol added, then let it sit. Sounds strange and likely is but the Absinthe/menthol taste goes great with frigid weather, to me.

A deer's musk glands are situated just inside the rectum and apparently it's either impossible or too costly for Mixture 79's blenders to distill just the musk, so they express everything from the deer's butt and use all of it.

I have trouble believing that a aromatic burley is going to have more in common with penzance, than it does less. Sounds like it has some of the flavors that I notice in the 'zance though, that's for sure.

I'm not big on Aros, but I enjoy some. 79 is one I do enjoy once in a while. The "flavor" is quite warm and comfortable to my palate. I prefer it to 1Q and all the 1Q hybrids.

I like it better than the Captains and pretty much all other drug store blends.
I like Carter Hill too on occassion.
As stated, you don't really get the tobacco flavor coming through... but heh... that's okay sometimes.
While I do like it, I smoke it rarely... A pouch every couple of months. Too many other good blends out there.

Tried M79 about 45 years ago, and couldn't stand it. Don't remember why. Didn't know as much about tobacco in those days (for you young'ens, there was no internet) so it might have been because I don't care for aromatics, and cannot stand anise/licorice. All I know is that it is on that (growing) list of blends I will never try again.
But, if you like it, enjoy!

I've been hyped to try Mixture 79 ever since the Cap'n mentioned it having a licorice tea flavor profile (hey, I drink a lot of licorice tea, what can I say?). I went so far as to call every tobacconist in town, trying to track down a bag or large can, to no avail; however, I was able to find some Velvet, so not a complete wash.
I've just been waiting around, trying to get some extra funds together to throw a bag onto a Smokingpipes.com order.
Typically I'm not a fan of heavy aromatics, but I've ejoyed a mild anise or licorice casing/topping on a few diffrent tobacco blends, so I have high hopes!

Anyone that compares a Esoterica product to a cheap dried weed like this is truly a ignorant ass who just wants to stir up the forums. Not worth even replying too.
