Then there's their bagging process.

I smoked a couple of pouches some fifty-seven years ago on my way up to English tobaccos, but recently acquired a pouch just for the heck of it. Smoked one bowl and was put off by the floral tones more than the anise. Tried a second bowl and decided that there's too much Latakia in my bloodstream for me to tolerate this tobacco. Chacon a son goût, but it's really not for me.

"Never tried 79, heard they used to use extract from deer musk glands or something"
"If you are referring to "deertongue", that's an herb."
I wasn't but I do like deertongue. The following quote is from someone who toured Sutliff and explains what I was talking about.
"The reason behind Mix #79's resemblance to cologne...maybe even Chanel #5...is musk. Some of you may know that musk originally was extracted from the musk pods of musk deer. The process was very difficult, as these pods are close to the testicles, and was a fatally cruel process...which killed a lot of deer to produce, since a kilo of musk necessitated the loss of between 30 to 50 deer. "
They've been using a synthetic as the practice of extraction was outlawed in.....'79.

I was looking at some deer-tongue earlier today to be bought bulk. I was curious as a former herbologist why it was used. Reduce inflammation, irritation and swelling, induces perspiration. Apparently it has been used to treat snakebite and gonorrhea (probably symptomatically). Main non-herbal use is to rehabilitate poor soils and to flavor tobacco. Medically they caution its use because its main ingredient is coumarin which thins the blood and may lead to liver damage, but then, half the pills out there shoved at you do that too.
Somewhat related or similar to Tonka beans, it is sweet tasting and very aromatic, but can cause a number of allergic reactions along with certain other flowers (like chrysanthemums). Probably the stuff they use in a lot of these Lakeland blends and if you have allergic tendencies toward that family of plants, probably why a lot of people are repelled by the stuff!

Oh yeah, it is also called Carolina Vanilla, Wild Vanilla or Vanilla leaf. Some sellers claim it can be used to make someone love you! :puffy:

Deertongue is green, you can see it when it's in a blend and there isn't any in Mixture 79. To my taste buds, deertongue has a sort of musty/moth ball taste, it tastes like the smell of an antique car interior....sounds weird, but that's what I get!
