Subtle Yet Obviously Different Pipes - How To Choose?

I prefer pipes that are closer to 'boring' than 'zany' but if these were my two choices I would say the bottom one, like a number of people have already suggested, go all the way.

Bottom one seems more thematically consistent, but even without the ornate carving I don't particularly like Apple shaped pipes.

I was leaning towards the bottom one but as some have pointed out it doesn't look quite right.

I've requested more pics. It's sometimes very hard to tell what the pipe is truly like from pics. I've ordered pipes that didn't photograph well but were stunning in real life and others that looked great in the pics but were disappointing upon arrival.

The bottom one is a bit better, both nice, but the rim on the top one is too rounded off.

The shape is "fish & arrow". The bottom one hints at bowfishing. Maybe a bass? I have a sandblasted one and I've always got an eye out for a smooth version for my collection.

See, that one I can appreciate a bit more. Something about the upswept “tail” of the bowl doesn’t do it for me on those smooth ones.

Does the carver do smooths shaped more like the one you’ve got?

I like the bamboo appointments, foot, and rustication on the one you have. Not sure how I feel about the others. Not really a big fan of the lance-looking shank. If the bottom one had bamboo like yours, I'd say jump on it.

Okay. This one and mine are by carver Sergey Senatorov.

The first two at the start of this thread are from carver Sergey Cherepanov.

For reference, the Senatorov pipe is about twice as much as the other two.

I'd look elsewhere if I wanted a speared fish pipe.
There are carvers who can pull it off.
