Tobacco farms in Kentucky alone have dwindled from over 60,000 30 years ago to only 984 now.
Yall are picking details as they fit your arguments. Yes, there are fewer, but the ones that exist are larger and on greater production. I live in tobacco country and I hear the talk from the farmers.
This same argument can be made for hog production, cattle and beef production, dairy farms, etc. There are fewer farms but the ones in production are much larger.
I saw today that a tax has been levied on Methane production and cow farts. Blue skies are ahead....... ;)

Now that is DEVASTATING news for us forum folk! And I'm not picking on anyone in particular when I say that... 😰

and cow farts.
Whew! Cancel red alert!! Sorry to have overreacted. Everything's good now.

At least, until I get my first cow. 🐄

Unquestionably US tobacco production is in free fall. In a twenty year period:

-Number of tobacco farms down 95% (2002-2022)
-Tobacco farm acreage down 52% (2002-2022)
-Tobacco production down 46% (2003-2023)
-Tobacco product manufacturing employment down 54% (2003-2021)
-US population up 16%

See that's a more specific statement to country and industry (US and production).

Bruce Weaver was a Dunhill collector. He told me there was a time when Canadian produced Dunhills were a thing as well.
Balogna......another myth. I've been retailing Dunhill tobacco products in Canada since 77. Never once have I heard that one....sheeesh....My Dad worked for the Canadian importer for all Dunhill products for 35+ years, never mentioned anything about Canuck made Dunhills, and he made alot of trips to Don Mills Rd in Toronto over those years.

[1924 up to 1927 then, 1928 up to 1929, and 1936 up to 1941] The patent for Dunhill's Oil Treatment/Sandblasting, registered in Canada.

The date code is just after the patent number (sometimes after ENGLAND): 1920 +: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 (they are smaller and underscored).

  • From '28 up to '29 the patent number was preceded by "CANADIAN PATENT" and stamped DUNHILL'S "SHELL" (without "Briar").

  • From '36 up to '41 the patent number was preceded by "CANADIAN PATENT" and in this case, stamped DUNHILL SHELL (without quotation marks and the possessive).

For those that didn't listen to the latest Get Piped podcast, they have a good relationship with Jeremy at Sutliff. They're informed guess was that the factory would be closed by the end of first quarter '25. They speculated that the private label blends, like H&H and SPC lines would not get picked up by STG and there are a few blends that would definitely go extinct due to machinery/process, like Sutliff's toasted burley and Mixture 79

If you give it a listen, the STG discussion gets going around the 30min mark

As well as this.

A trademark or patent registered in Canada in no way indicates that any manufacturing was happening there.

I read it already.
My statement stands.

BTW, since I’m headed to bed soon and have a busy day tomorrow, I thought I’d post all my future replies to this thread in advance:

  • Yes
  • No
  • Maybe
  • No f’n way!
  • Someone here told me that’s bullshit
  • It’s just getting worse and worse
  • That’s a relief!
  • I told you so
  • Post-war, to be sure
  • Got a cite for that?
  • General Motors never actually produced pipe tobacco
  • That’s what she said

You can’t stay in business in this field by telling people that there might be a problem with supply. Skip, owner if the Briary, laughed and told me that forums are full of morons when I said that McClelland was closing. His manager actually called Mary on speaker phone and told us all that they most definitely were NOT going out of business, even as we were all on here reading and interpreting Mike’s farewell letter.

Rule number one is that everyone in the business is full of shit. They have to be, if they want to make money.

That, and as I pointed out above, most B&M owners aren’t the smartest lightbulbs on the tree.
Yeah man it’s a sad thing I know. I did say right in the beginning of my post that I heard what I thought “could be taken as good news”. I probably could have worded it better because I definitely didn’t mean to say that I thought the rumors weren’t true or that what I heard should be taken as solid evidence that proves anything. Damn it man I’m just now getting good at this glorious hobby. I don’t want to believe that all those amazing blends I haven’t tried yet will be disappearing soon. I still haven’t had the opportunity to try even one McClelland blend yet. Guess I was just trying to stay positive. 😢

Holy crap, Batman! I go out for a physical therapy appointment, pick up some items at Trader Joe's and Albertson's only to return to discover that this thread has now morphed into theoretical discussions of the state of tobacco and an existential discussion over inflation.

Where's the discussion about invaders from Mars?

Please shoot this thread and put it out of its misery.

As far as STG’s ‘23 annual report, my takeaway was that pipe tobacco is maybe 2% of their North American sales (smoking tobacco is pipe and fine-cut combined) markedly eclipsed by their 11% chunk of lighters and accessories🤔

There’s more concern over “carbon reduction” crappola than for their pipe tobacco market it seems.
