The few times I saw someone out smoking a pipe and I approached, they were always smoking something I had never tried. Swapping a bowl or two worth was typical.

I have, on seeing someone carrying home toilet paper, so far resisted shouting "TP!! TP FOR YOUR BUNGHOLE!!". But it has been a close run thing.Its a bit like walking up to someone buying toilet paper and screaming, "Wow, you wipe? I do too! We must have so much in common!"
That slang never made sense to me. A bunghole is a hole in a wine or whiskey barrel.

That's reminded me of a woman at work who was very excited about getting a couple of water butts, to collect rainwater for her garden. I gave her good advice about overwintering and told her that the spigot and tap should be removed and the hole plugged. Luckily, I said, you can find a range of butt plugs online, just do a search. She was so naive....

Was at my local Walmart a guy was parked 2 cars down from, me he lighted his pipe ,was going to ask him what he was smoking but saw him put away a pouch of criss cross
More than a few of us here are asocial. I'm always hesitant to foist my company off onto a stranger, whether he has a pipe in his maw or not. What possible reason could there be to do that. I don't know of one. I'll smile and doff my hat to a passing lady but, that is pretty much the extant of my interaction with strangers.
When I rode my big twin I didn't bother other cyclists. Why would I? I was out for a solo ride, enjoying myself. I wasn't into "bikes", I was into long solo rides.

Hey! Some of us are weird old assholes.
I like guns, collecting crystal skulls, drawing, Rubiks type puzzles, and skateboarding. It would never cross my mind to interact with others about it as they are pursuits that I enjoy alone. If you see someone smoking a pipe these days, it may be the only "me" time that they are afforded and you'd deprive them of that?
I was kayaking down a lazy river with the Warden and we came upon a group of people floating in tubes. Just as we were passing them I caught a lovely whiff of pipe tobacco. I called out to the guy smoking and although I was smoking a cigar, we shared a moment.

Its very rare still in the city of ~20million people in greater Jakarta, but we do have some FB groups, and i think meets once in a while (i haven't get into the gathering just yet, being a relative newcomer) - . Other pipe smokers i know sell and buy pipes/tobaccos.
i carry and puff my pipe wherever i want - work, stroll with the dog, family gathering, offroading, nightclubs
here you can smoke pretty much everywhere,in any bar cafes or nightclubs

Thirty-five years ago that was something you would have seen. My hands and wrists are becoming more and more useless with the passing years though. Maybe a 360 flip or an impossible.
