If you had to choose just one or two pipes in your collection that are what you consider your "best smokers" what would they be and why?

For me the answer would be my pair of Bewlay Emeralds. When I purchased these pipes back in the 70s they were bright green and part of a limited production for St. Patrick's Day. Over the years they have acquired a warm brown patina. These two pipes always smoke dry and cool no matter how hard I puff and require almost no relights.

These are among my best smokers. If I had to choose 2, it would be the bent apple on the left and the volcano.

Good topic. I have had a bad case of PAD lately and bought a couple of great smokers - which I totally cannot afford, but PAD is bad. Once I have pics I will share.

Captain, I LOVE that Aldo Velani. The grain is simply amazing. But why do you call it a calabash? From this angle it looks like a plateau rim Dublin.
As for me, I'd pick these two:

Okay, here's mine (sorry, I had to post three).
Stanwell Limited Edition Pipe of the Year 2010:
stanwell-sterling-600x421.jpg

This Stanwell is likely my best smoker. The thing never gets too hot, no gurgle, smokes like a dream. I finally have my "Bing". I wasted so much time buying cheaper estates that all had to be returned due to misrepresentation by the sellers. I finally just bit the bullet and got the pipe I wanted.
L'Anatra Sandblasted Billiard:
lanatra-600x389.jpg

This L'Anatra is not only one of my favs, it's a superb smoker. Very impressed with this pipe.
Stanwell Volcano/Brandy (kindly gifted to me by Bradley - the old cajun!)
stanwell_choice-600x432.jpg

This pipe is an amazing smoker. Never gets hot, smokes like a dream from the moment I received it. I have been nothing but impressed with Stanwells and I will always be grateful to Bradley for his generosity. Thanks again Bradley - you are the best of the best. :puffy:

@Numbersix... Stanwell makes such a great smoking pipe... at least the one I have is fantastic and I really debated about whether it was in my top 2.

My Savinelli Pisa 316. This was the 2nd pipe I ever bought and it smokes perfectly! It had been sitting in my local BM since 2002 (said the owner) and no one ever grabbed it, so when they had a "20 % off all pipes sale" I had to snatch it up!

This is hard because I have about 14 pipes in my collection that I consider to be my best and I reach for them all the time. For the purpose of this thread I will pick out two but honestly they are equal to the others.
My first Rad Davis I ever bought is a Lovat, I bought it new and it is a joy to smoke. It is incredibly light at 40 grams and it has a group 5 chamber which gives me a nice long smoke. It has smoked cool and dry since the first smoke and to this day I have still never needed a pipe cleaner to soak up excess moisture. The stem is incredibly comfortable and the pipe is great for clenching. I smoke only three blends in it, Escudo, Solani 633 and SG St James Flake, and all three taste great in it.

This Former is a pipe that I bought new back in 2001 and to this day it has always been one of my favorites. It has incredibly thick walls but is extremely light for it's size. It smokes very cool and dry and I love the unique look that it has. The ring grain blast is one of the best I have ever seen on a pipe and the birdseye on the top is very cool looking. The first pic is when the pipe was brand new and the red top was quite dramatic. After so many years the color has turned a ruby red and has a much different look that I really like. I smoke only VA flakes in it and it smokes them very nicely.

Thank you Captain. I don't know how old you are but I will be 55 in December, I am sure you are much younger so you will have plenty of time to get there. When I grow up I want bigvans collection, now that guy has some serious pipes.
