OK, I'm not showing off a Peterson but it is tangentially about a Peterson and didn't want to start a thread just for this mini-bitch. ;) I've been toying around with the thought of picking up a SH Hudson for awhile now and like to check SP, particularly its estates. For a while they've had this estate Hudson-a rusticated- for sale at a price only $8 less than new. Why in the heck would anyone buy that instead of simply shelling out $8 more and get new?

Well, :sher: the answer COULD be IF it is a smooth, the grain is VERY often much nicer or more striking (straight) on the older estate pipes.
IF rusticated as your reference is about, some prefer a vulcanite stem compared to an acrylic p-lip or f-tail.
Could also be a preference for or against the style of rustication or sandblast as both have changed over the years to the approval or the disapproval of many in the peanut gallery.
One thing is for sure, Peterson pipes are both loved AND hated by the pipe community! They seem to catch more grief than other factory made briar, yet also inspire a deep deep devotion among Pete Geeks globally. puffy

I think it's simply because Petersons will sell no matter the price. When I was buying them on eBay a few years ago, they were a fraction of what they sell for now. If SP will get it, why would they price it lower?

Although I agree, it's crazy.
I've focused on buying new pipes for years now, though, about 2 years ago did buy a like new estate Baskerville from SP that was around 23% off, which I felt was enough of a discount.

Well, in the last few month I managed to acquire 4 Pre Republic Petersons. Top to bottom, a 312 System Premier that dates between 1815-1922, a System 3, shape 9 that dates between 1923-1937, a 314 System Standard that dates between 1938-1942 and a System Standard, shape 307 that dates between 1942-1946. I'm looking for a Patent Era 1875-1915 pipe and a 1947-1949 one and I will then possibly, maybe, not sure be content and sleep better.

I suspect this is/was one of the elusive Peterson "Giants" that Mark Irwin mentions in PPN. I found it interesting that it has a cross in the stamping and I wonder of that was done regularly (?) :

I have a rusticated Peterson Giant and it doesn’t have the cross.
