My D6 … brilliant shape IMHO. It is often used for a churchwarden — but not this one.
Anyone else noticed QC at Peterson seems to have nose-dived again? Received this little 3085 this morning and it's covered in little dings. Pretty poor for an €140 pipe in my opinion...
That’s disappointing.
The semicircle defect at the top of the panel looks pretty concerning to me as well.
I wondered about that as well when it first arrived, but that was just poorly-buffed wax, there was loads on the other side too.
Just this morning I got an email from Laudisi regarding a return I sent in for evaluation. The silver ferrule wasn't fully integrated properly, and gaps could be seen with the stem removed.
They agreed and were happy to replace it.
But while I had her on the phone I mentioned that in spite of my love of their pipes, there were a couple of recurring issues I'd noticed.
1. Stem inserted and aligned with shank (such as the Hansom) but that the P-lip wasn't parallel to the rim. (I actually didn't notice that one for over a year, but when I did - it stands out to me now and aggravates me...) Seen this on more than one...
2. Stamping. I'm a little disappointed to see such repeated statements as: "Stamping worn from buffing" on listings from SmokingPipes when I know darn well from purchasing new ones that in most cases, it seems the stamping issues arrive to the consumer that way from the factory. I wish they'd stop blaming the customer.
But I'm still a Pete Geek..... just not certified
I'm just going to be more detailed in my inspection any time I get a new one from now on.

I hadn't thought of this until you mentioned it but I think you're right. It implies that it's from the previous owner but could've been worn off from SP's own buffing which I'm guessing isn't from overworking the pipe on the buffer. But like you I've seen the faint stamping from brand new Petersons.
How the hell Peterson still has enough arrogance to put out such clunckers' on the contemoprary market today, You don't see such specimens among any well known renowned pipe manufacturers, like, Savinelli, Stanwell or Chacoms
Agreed, it's pretty poor form. But they do it because they know we'll buy them! And I suppose now that a lot of people buy online they don't necessarily see the pipe before buying it (and then may or may not return it).
Peterson's is one of the only marques with so much mystique and enthusiasm (Pete Geeks), which has 'budget' pipes available (unlike, say, Dunhill). I also think the fact they are Irish plays into their popularity, particularly in the US (and I mean absolutely no offense by this, it's just an observation).
None of this matters when they're releasing good pipes. But it will definitely be a while before I buy a new Peterson again.
I'm still enamored. Not really able to clearly elicit why, but I am. I keep buying. In spite of the "quirks".

As to why we like plump pipes, that's more complicated...
The last Peterson I bought was a straight billiard with the draught hole drilled 3/8" too high. Which is why that will be the last Peterson I buy. If a company's QA is so poor that they mis-drill a straight billiard that significantly, and then they don't notice the mistake before they package it, then they don't get my money. A shame, really, as I've always loved Peterson's style.

A nice little estate 312 with some interesting grain...
And I've got a replacement House Pipe coming in soon. I paid the difference and upgraded from blasted to smooth. Haven't even seen it, but she said she picked out a "nice one" for me.

Did you send your pipe blasted house pipe due to defects and then got to upgrade it to a smooth?
Yeah, further up I had a little rant about stamping issues, but what started it all was a defect in the ferrule internally not jiving properly.
It was bought new from a seller on Ebay and I'd let it sit for about 5 months in my pile of "future Peterson pipes to gift to self" before a thorough inspection.
The seller, (although he goes under a name that indicates a "professional" store or similar) whined about the time lag even though I presumed he should have been able to deal with Laudisi easier than I. Since he wouldn't honor a return, but I was convinced it was a manufacturers defect, I contacted Laudisi and sent it in. They were quick to respond, handling it the day they received.
I was hoping they would let me pay the $ difference and upgrade to a smooth. They did, although I haven't seen it, I maintain high hopes that I'll like it.
I'd love to know who the original seller was so I can avoid them.
I could see his point. But as a customer I'll take my concerns over his. I won't state anything public. Look for PM.
