I was following that briar circle Pete, too. I think it was Dan Chasin that had recently posted something about a similar pipe in his collection, possibly in the PSOI group. It’s definitely cool. The photos by Chance Whittamore (greatestatepipes) always seem somewhat oversaturated and with lots of added contrast, but pipes you buy from him are restored to as close to new as is possible. I can highly recommend him.

Man they killed it with the dark smooths. I wish they’d just use this in lieu of the heritage finish.

Awesome set, congrats!
Same. Before the Heritage finish came out I think Dark Smooth filled that spot as the lowest end smooth.

It seems like they figure the stummels that were set for Dark Smooths were either good enough to become Terracotta (or maybe even Natural) or not good enough and so became Heritage.

The prevalence of the Heritage finish and the scarcity of the Dark Smooth finish also suggests that the latter costs a lot more to create.

My guess is that the heritage stain hides grain imperfections and fills much better. The dark smooth over time creates a very nice contrast.
