Since I retired (about 6 months ago) I've smoked meerschaum pipes 80% of the time - all Altinay's, because all my meerschaum pipes are from Altinay.
My new Astas billiard just showed up today. Biggest pipe I own. Light as a feather. I'm starting to understand why @Chasing Embers likes big pipes. Easy on the hands.
Good price. That's around the max of what I've paid for all of mine.
I don't like paying more than this. But it seems prices are rising steadily these days.
I splurged a bit on the mountain lion and big skull, $260 and $280 respectively, but $250 and under is where I stay with meerschaum. Directly from the carver is the way to go. Retailers often double the price.
Also helps to have a friendship with the carver
Those are great prices! Who are the carvers that you've used? I had a quote for way more than that for a relatively simple pipe.

I have never really been a huge fan of figural meerschaum pipes but now that I have become enamoured with meers I thought perhaps I should have one if I can get a good price. So I tried making a pretty lowball offer on a viking meer by S. Cosgun on ebay from pipesdepot and it was accepted.
The first one is a caged lattice Calabash meer. This was my first one. Don't recall who makes it but it is a nice big piece. The second is a carve your own block I bought on ebay. Figured I would try my hand at carving. Didn't come out too bad ,both are pretty colored now. I use them alot especially when trying out new blends that I want to taste a true flavor on.the last one is a Kirsten D model with a caged lattice bowl. It's probably the favorite out of all my Kirsten's..that meer bowl is huge. That one was painted to look colored unfortunately. I usually like to get them pure white but that D model is super nice and the carving on the bowl is fantastic so meh lol.

Earlier this year I picked up this Andreas Bauer. It's my first meerschaum and I have yet to smoke it.
The man who sold it to me said I am the third owner. The original owner told him it was made in 1980. The origin amber tamper that came with the pipe is missing.
Can anyone point me to a source or method whereby I can determine for sure what year it was made?
The metal plate on the box has a number etched into it by hand (a serial/sales number I'n guessing). I can't remember the number at the moment but searches of that number online haven't produced any results or additional information.
