Yeah I think your date range is pretty spot on, 4 digit/4 hole Super grain would late 30's early 40's. Does it have a clover stamped on the shank or a reg number on the stinger?
It doesn’t have either…just “drinkless” on the stinger.
It cleaned up nicely, and it looks like you’ve gotten the stem properly clocked. To my limited knowledge the date info seems solid. Nice pipe!
Thanks! I looked up the shape number. I think this is correct. I feel like this was a good deal. I failed to bid on this once, mixing up the time difference on eBay. Another countdown went by for me to get it at 20$. I think if this had been a more exotic shape perhaps more people would have bid up the price. I just wrote recently that I was done buying pipes and I got pulled back in!

39-41 I'd think, but pre WWII for sure.

I wonder if my post inspired someone here to get it? It was a great price but they wouldn’t ship to me in Japan. In any case, it sold.

I don’t know if it’s ok to keep posting my random links on general Kaywoodie stuff but, anyway, I noticed this interesting shape I’ve never seen before. This is a ‘30s pipe. The only shame is, it looks like it has chamber damage? That’s over my head to do anything about: Kaywoodie Drinkless 7732 Vintage Antique Estate Pipe Large 4 hole stinger Nice | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/225568017260
Yeah that looks like a total loss, probably a chewed up button hiding under that softy as well. Not an uncommon shape though. I have a similar thorn panel. IMG_6047.jpegIMG_6041.jpeg

Oh that’s a sweet one. I’m becoming a bit more obsessed with Kaywoodies. I notice Mkelaw has a bunch of nice 30s Kaywoodies these days and I want another pre-war Kaywoodie or maybe a 20s KBB if I can find it. But they still go much cheaper on eBay if one is patient and willing to do the cleaning up. I’ve just realized lately that there’s something about those Kaywoodies. There’s less at stake in pursuing them yet the quality is tops, especially those prewar ones, and the history is fascinating. Chasing other pipes is too expensive and ends up being less about quality anyway.

Wait, that thorn came with a case? Huh! Ain’t that something!

Random terrible idea: a Broadway musical about the history of KB&B. Pipes that sing and dance? Maybe we can sell a million percent to investors and keep the money when it closes on the first night.

Forgive my ignorance. Are the threads in kaywoodie stingers all the same? I have a saddle stem and would rather have a straight stem

The threads are the same pitch. But the stingers are not all the same size. A stem from another pipe would still have to fitted your pipe like any other.

The inventories on Kaywoodie, Medico, and Yello-Bole are getting thin. Better get them while you can. I somewhat have the idea that it is now essentially a one-man operation, maybe with some part-time assistants.

The ones I have bought new in the last six or eight years have been well made pipes, thin-walled but good insulators while being light weight.

The great American (U.S.) briar pipe industry has really faded. I think the highest volume factory in the U.S. now is Dr. Grabow in Sparta, N.C., and it is not a large factory. Second only to Missouri Meerschaum that does not make briar pipes, mostly corncob and some hardwood (maple).

Edwards seems to have ceased producing pipes. I have some beauties in the Benton series sold as Iwan Ries house pipes, Algerian oil-cured briar, that I bought about 30 years ago that are fine pipes and still going strong.

As a footnote, I don't believe Kaywoodie makes stinger pipes anymore since they stopped making the Drinkless series with the screw-in stems combined with the stingers. The most recent Drinkless pipes were push bits, and I'm not sure they are still in production.

Hi folks. This pipe is shape # 5105 with a 4-hole ball type stinger (drinkless). It’s a Supergrain over Kaywoodie. I wonder if someone could tell me if I’m correct that the date would be ‘37-‘40? I couldn’t understand why this was only 20$ on eBay. It seemed like real luck to me. What do you think? I worked all day cleaning it up. View attachment 219490
