I’ve inherited my father’s collection of 200 or so pipes, mostly from the 1960s.
I’m up to my ears learning about this collection, and having fun getting to know the community. I’ll be on to ask questions as I go!
Here are the Charatan pipes

I’ve collected the posts about Charatan pipes made by the late, great, Ken Barnes, who trained and worked at Charatan, and whose father was the General Manager of Charatan.
They are in a special page located just above the forum and provide a lot of information about them that you may find useful.

Question: Do any of you have any input on this Charatan?
IMG_0955.jpegThe mark on it is Charatans Make 211
I can’t find any information on any that are carved like this, and I just love this face.
Sorry I don’t have more photos, I can take more in the next couple of days if you need.

If that is in fact a genuine Charatan I would think it quite rare. Take some photos of the nomenclature, (stamped or engraved wording on the pipe) it should have something like"Charatans Make London England" somewhere on the pipe, probably on the bottom or side of the shank.

In 1980 Charatan made available at the RTDA show a number of (ugly) carved head pipes that sort of resembled "apple-dollies". These came in a hinged, brown (if I remember right) presentation box with a card identifying the carver and, possibly, the "name" of the figure ("Cavalier" etc). They were large pipes, about seven inches long. Could this be one of those?

I didn't know Charatan did this. That pipe could very well be one of those!

1980 was the first time I went to the RTDA show, and I'm embarrassed to admit that I bought one of these for the shop I represented. It never did sell in the years that I worked there.

Thanks for all your feedback, this guy is older I believe! It’s pretty small in size. He’s loved, my dad smoked it quite a bit. Looks like a genuine Charatan and with the original mouthpiece. Hopefully some Charatan expert will chime in on this piece.

Did we figured a way how to differentiate Frederick's and Rebuen's era pipes in cases that it's not too obvious?
I just got my first group 1 Belvedere and was wondering...

Someone more familiar with the timeline will need to chime in but personally I’ve not seen any reference to the Belvedere until the late 1950s. Before then it fails to appear in a number of places you’d expect, eg the 1951 catalog, numerous contemporary price lists, and trade advertisements. Of course lack of evidence is not evidence but notwithstanding that I’d want to see something pretty concrete to push the origin of the Belvedere back to Frederick’s time, who after all died in 1918.
