I’m really amazed by both the condition and the quality of the Barling stem. Someone really took care of this pipe. But the stem strikes me as being sturdier than other English pipes, maybe even than Dunhills - although Duns are comfortable and obviously high quality. But this Barling stem seems sturdier. The stem also has almost no wear on it.

I only own two Barlings, but in my humble opinion, they do not take a back seat to any brand... And you are right, they are quite sturdy.
I forgot to mention that the shaping suggests to me that the pipe looks like it was carved in St Claude, which was the source for many of the pipes finished by the major British manufacturers of the period.
That’s amazing, considering its age. Barling used the highest grade German made Vulcanite. Even my two 1880’s Barlings have stems that look new and flawless.
I just took delivery of a new Barling meerschaum as I’ve always wanted a meer with silver caps and spigot. This army is close enough! Ive been smoking it almost exclusively to get some color. The 9mm without a filter is wide open and lovely. 
You picked up a WW2 era sandblast, probably 1943 thru 44. It looks to be in excellent condition with a nice blast. A little polish on the stem, avoiding the crossed Barling stem Logo, and a normal cleaning and you have about $325 worth of pipe.
That is a family era Barling’s make pot. It will be a fantastic smoker!

I own several Barling pots, including this one. Barling was known for the quality of its pots. All of mine are wonderful smoking machines.

I already knew that our own Bard of Barling's (aka Jesse Silver) had written some stuff for them but HOLY INFO, BATMAN!!! Man, I don't know this much crap about my own family, much less a pipe.....
