Here is a new Barling Quaint I picked up at antique store recently. Cleaned it up and it’s ready to go! I have a hard time dating Barlings but it has Barlings design on the underside of the stem so I believe that puts it after the 50’s but I’m not sure.

Good Evening,

Just picked up my first two Barling's for my collection.

Could an expert (Mr. Silver haha) help me out by answering a couple of questions?

This doesn't concern my pipes, but I'm curious all the same:
What does the stamp "TVF" denote? I've scoured the internet searching for an answer and I'm coming up empty.

Could you please help me narrow down the production years of my pipes?

First one is a meerschaum.

Second one is a Guinea-Briar pot.

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge with me.

Hope all is well.

- AJ
TVF stands for The Very Finest.

I'd say after 1962 family era with the Barling mark, but with the Barling's Design mark on the stem, but not long after, at least that's my best guess. The stem mark is often seen on the 1962 Barling's Make four digit pipes.

Thank you so much! I’ve been through pipeda a few times trying to learn how to date a Barling but I just can’t get it right!. It seems as though there is bleed over from one period to the next. makes my simple brain hurt

That's a very nice piece. Definitely after 1962. Barling continued to issue Quaints after the family left. But unlike the earlier one-of-a-kind Quaints, the company established a half dozen or so designs that were produced in multiples. IIRC, there should be a single digit number for the design, stamped on the shank.

I should get some much better photos taken; fine Barlings certainly deserve that, especially when sharing. Bought this cased companion set some years ago. Unsmoked, see bowl pics. No idea when produced, nor how rare.
If you can post images of the nomenclature I may be able to answer your questions. Check the underside of the stem for a stem stamp.
As for rarity, scarcer than hen’s teeth.

Not rare at all. I'll offer you one Dogecoin for it.

Wow fantastic set! I have a idea. But I’ll defer to Jesse. What does the bottom of the stem say? Reg # or Design? Or can’t you read anything? You will find it on the bottom of the stem. Where the stem and shank meet.

Right, sorry, I neglected to note the bottom of the stem is free from markings.

The case style, construction, and materials help in determining the period as well, don't you think?
