Show Me Pipe Rack / Storage Options

As I look to get a new pipe, I took a look at my existing pipes in an effort to 'cull the herd'. Turns out I just need a bigger barn.

I'd like to see some different ways you guys are storing your pipes. I have limited space for them, and need some ideas on how to store / display them.

Do you have a daily "go to" smoke?

If so, a rack with a tobacco jar makes a decent option. Mine holds 6 pipes (I've seen smaller and slightly larger) and they can be found on ebay for a reasonable price.

I picked up this old oak, bow-front cabinet at estate sale. It needed some small repairs and I got it cheap.
I added six, Fairfax brand six-pipe racks and a bunch of "Westie" stands. I put an LED light on each level. It has served my purpose well (it is almost too big these days!)

I commissioned a sixteen pipe rack by JIEZAWOODstudio in China. I had to wait a little bit because he needed to photograph it for his Etsy shop (my rack is the one used for his photos of the sixteen pipe rack with tin storage below) and am very happy with it. Its width better accommodates my wider pipes than my twenty-four or thirty-six Decatur racks, which are narrow (they’re from a different era when pipes tended to be smaller). My biggest complaint about the Decatur racks is that any lower rows that have holes for stems can mostly only fit straight pipes. These options can cost hundreds, but, bargains can be found.

These days, I’ve switched to just getting ProSource 18 sunglasses boxes, which can be used to display or close up and pack pipes. The limitation is the size of the compartment when it comes to the the length and width of the pipe. For medium and small pipes, they’re great. Amazon has these for twenty bucks a pop.

I find it necessary and pretty easy to modify the older racks (Decatur or Fairfax). I cut the o-shapes into u-shapes. There's a thread I posted here somewhere on that mod

I have several racks, large and small. They're a pain in the butt. And no one other than other pipe smokers, cats, and small children look upon them as anything of interest, at least in my circle. I am thinking of just throwing my <100 pipes into a drawer or drawers. I have several lawyer-type bookcases with the drawers on the bottom, and there they'll go, out of sight and mind. But everyone has to do their own thing.

If I did want to display them, for whatever reason, I'd toss the friggin' racks and opt for the pegboard type of display, like the B&Ms do, with the rubber shank grippers (fishing rod holders?) that allow easy, secure access.

Since I care about the condition of the pipes I’ve collected I store them in fitted bases like this one.
This keeps them protected from air and light between periods of use.

Not all of the multi-tiered Decatur racks have the holes at the front that can be converted to u-shapes—many have the holes in the rear on the lower levels, that sit behind the divots that are on the same level.

I have an antique Governor Winthrop desk, nearly identical to the one shown below. The four drawers, each with a fluffy terry towel folded to fit the bottom, hold my entire collection of some 90-plus pipes.

I use a five drawer cabinet from Ikea. Two drawers for pipes and three drawers for tobacco and supplies. I keep all of my Peterson's in their boxes until I want to smoke one.

I sold all of my racks and holders...I didn't like the clutter of the pipes sitting out.
