+1 smokingtexan. I liked it as well. I probably wouldn't buy more of it, but I will enjoy smoking it through the week for sure.

After my first smoke I am a still too unsure about this blend to commit. I loved the smell from the tin but at first I found the taste a bit harsh/dry. Will follow up with more bowls.

I can't wait to pop my tin of Deephollow after dinner tonight.
I need to start smoking more though... My collection of open tins is growing faster then I can smoke them.

Hey Guys:
The official kick off for the first week of the September Tobacco Crawl is Friday, September 5, and the featured tobacco is McClelland's Craftsbury: Deep Hollow, a ribbon cut, Virginian Aromatic. We figured an extra week might be useful to sort out the previous month's experience, or just smoke some partially used tins.
However, feel free to light em up anytime. Some of us couldn't wait, as you can see from previous posts. I confess I couldn't delay gratification and cracked my tin of Escudo over the weekend.
catyrpelius mentioned that he had some open tins and that reminded me of an idea. Most of us who smoked the blends in the August crawl had definite preferences. While Old Dark Fire got more number one rankings than the rest, there were plenty who preferred 3Nuns or PPP or GLP JNP and could really pass on other blends.
I was thinking that you guys might want to trade partially used tins that didn't suit your palate for your preferred blends. Don't know if it is really worthwhile but just a thought.

Kick-Off for the September Crawl Commences today:
McClelland - Deep Hollow (Craftsbury Series)

Far into the woods, away from the urban cacophony, is where the light, fragrant blend of rich Red Stoved Virginias is designed to transport the smoker. Relax and enjoy the moment.
Notes: The name Deep Hollow comes from the works of JRR Tolkien. Deephallow (Deep Hollow): A village on the Shire's eastern border, built on the banks of the River Brandywine. Immediately across the river was Haysend, the southernmost point of Buckland, while just to the south of Deephallow, the River Shirebourn flowed into the Brandywine.

Initial reactions to Deep Hollow:
I smoked a couple of bowls of Deep Hollow, and for me, it was a relatively mild tobacco in taste, and while an aromatic, the room notes weren't overbearing.
Opening the tin, the case note were sweet. I would describe the smell as vaguely vanilla and Karo syrup, not much natural tobacco smell to it. The tobacco was just a bit sticky and slightly moist. It packed well in my newly broken-in Falcon, took a couple of charring lights, then lit evenly, and burned consistently requiring just a couple of lights. The draw in the Falcon was tight but I traced that back to the pipe, as I had no problems with draw in my Savinelli author.
It was a sweet smoke, not very complex, but burned wet. I had some gurgling, which I had not previously experienced in either pipe with other blends. I also detected some bite developing, and this morning I was aggravated to discover that I had indeed incurred a slight case of tongue bite. The problem with the draw on the Falcon may have contributed to the bite problem.
The ash was fine, but unlike the VaBurs we smoked last month, left a little dottle - but not nearly as much or as messy as drug store aromatics.
I haven't smoked many quality aromatics. As a matter of fact, the only other was 7 Seas Black. I liked 7 Seas a bit better and don't remember getting any bite from it. But both are far superior to the drug store pouches.
I'll have to rest the tongue for a day or two before going back to Deep Hollow, and will make a point of smoking it a bit slower. I also think I'll air dry the tobacco for a while, before packing. Or just pack a bowl and set it aside for a half hour so before smoking.
I'm not going to rate this blend yet until I have tried different preparations and in pipes that are functioning properly.

Suggestions and feedback requested for organizing the Tobacco Crawl
Greetings all:
Thank you all for your participation in the August tobacco craw. I for one, found the experience educational, and discovered at least one tobacco that I will likely start cellering (ODF), and probably 3Nuns as well.
Now that we have some experience with the concept, what are your suggestions? Do we wish to continue with 4 blends per month? Members are always free to smoke as few or as many blends as they like but are 4 new blends per month too many? Any other comments or critiques?
Pax

Well I liked the idea of a general rating system for each blend the crawl explores.
Also it might be a hassle to make it a sticky each month but possibly a general sticky explaining the pax to Any new comers in the OP and then links to the monthly crawls as they come within the sticky.
4 blends a month is fine for me.
That's all I got for now

I'll second @smokey's post. A sticky would do well for this/us. The four blends a month is fine, especially if you're sharing tins.
I think last month's trek went well. I really only enjoyed the ODF and Three Nuns, though the VaBurs aren't my thing. I think this month will be better as I am already digging the Deep Hollow, I love Escudo and Epiphany smells good.

I thought about requesting a sticky but thought it a little presumptuous. So, how would we go about getting one posted? It could also be used to establish the calendar of themes, blend selectors and the list of members by seniority for the selection teams?

Don't worry about asking for stickys the mods are great like that they will access the crawl and pass judgement on It they will see it only benefits the site. I remember asking Kevin to make the show off your ___ here! Thread a sticky he was very polite and helpful. And gladly

Accepted it.

My second bowl of Deep Hollow was much better than the first. It is definitely a mild aro with a virginia base that I enjoy.
As for suggestions I really don't have anything that I would like to change. I hope that people continue to contribute like they did over the first month. (I am also working on tabulating the final average rankings from last month just out of people's interest).

I nabbed a 50g tin of Deep Hollow that has a few years on it already. I think I smoked this one back when I first started trying VA's the first time around, so maybe fifteen years ago.
My impression of this current tin is kinda meh, this flavor does not do anything for me. The VA's were good in terms of quality, but did not enjoy the aromatic and unfortunately the red VA's bit like a mother. I've had a bad reaction to red VA's going back many years, but every so often I grab a blend that has it and think this one will be different. Have been proved wrong on every occasion.
If you like red VA's and like a quality aromatic, give it a try. That is about the only recommendation I can give it.

When I first smoked Deep Hallow I was surprised by how mild it was After last months blends I was having a hard time picking out any flavor but after smoking it for a while and getting used to the mild flavor I can say it has really good earthy tones, it is sweet, has very little bite, and is easy to smoke. One thing that I did notice right of was the wonderful aroma right after opening the tin also my sister inlaw said it smelled really good while I was smoking it. It was a very smooth and gentle smoke and really reminded me if a tamed down version of ODF. All that being said I will give it a 6; I might by it again but I wouldn't stock up on it. I would rather stock ODF. Overall a good smoke and I am sure others love it and for good reason just a little mild for me.
