I picked up a 320 recently (fat Author style, right?), and I'm disappointed because it's the hottest-smoking pipe that I own (and most of the pipes I smoke are cheap new Kaywoodies, Grabows, and MMs).
Balkisobrains - you say it's not a flake pipe? Well uh-oh, because that's mostly what I've smoked in it, although I've also smoked some Irish Oak and also found it a bit hot. Not hot in the hand, but I just couldn't seem to keep the smoke cool in my mouth, and from the construction aspects the smoke should have been cooler, so I thought. You know there's something wrong when you are keeping a pipe ghost-free without anything strong (Virgina flake (OGS, PS Bullseyes (Mostly VA) and not-ghosty-but-tasty Irish Oak), puffing slow, and still what you're smoking in it doesn't taste like it does in your other pipes, or taste like much at all. So essentially the smoke seemed to be hotter, plus there was weaker taste. Could it be that I forgot to remove the damned finish which the factories fuck you with before I began smoking? I took my reamer to it after thinking about it, I saw a narrow band of bare wood in the center of the bowl before I continued, but did not want to ruin it. I've got a Butner which is too small for that pipe, a senior reamer which doesn't seem to fit right, and a Decatur four-piece and none of them are really good for this one - oh, well! Smoked it again, and there still seems to be the same problem.
Anyway, I don't want to hijack the thread, but which tobaccos are best recommended for the Sav 320KS?
