I am hoping it is just a matter of time as SG blends are on my to be purchased next list. Did my taxes a little late this year so I am hoping for a few more weeks before they come back in stock.

I wish I had a clear answer about this. The smaller companies like SG/GH and Germain have always been a little harder to get than most others, but it certainly is more exaggerated now than in the past. All of their products sold in the US are on allocation, so we don't actually place and order per se. The distributors just send us what they can when their shipment arrives.

Both companies are very traditional and they don't want to change their processes to increase production, and I certainly understand that. While pipe smoking overall is flat to slightly up, in terms of consumption, the hobbyist segment seems to be growing, which may explain some of it. More of the people who picked up a pipe in recent years may have moved from aromatics into products like these.

Another reason we should keep our big trap shuts about what blends we smoke. We have a huge wave of millennials coming in, building huge cellars, so if you just pick up the occasionally SG tin and enjoy it, you may be screwed, because of the braggarts and boasters. The forums have always gotten wasy more traffic than participants. So, when you tell one person in the forums something, like I told Mcitinner, "Hey try Mixture 79, it's amazing!" Not only he will see it, but a few hundred other people that you don't know. Same reason that if you are thinking about buying a pipe, don't post the stupid link and ask us if it is a good deal. That is incredibly stupid. 9 times out of 10, in all of my years on here, someone watching your thread will buy it before you.

Unless you have over twenty pounds of something, just keep it to yourself, especially if you want to see it on shelves again.

By this logic we shouldn't talk about any pipe tobacco...except how awesome Captain Black is because we are afraid millennials will "steal" our precious supply of tobacco. We shouldn't post about anything we like here and just keep our traps shut because pipe tobacco is an insiders club.

Selling out of tobacco is a good thing for the industry that has been stagnating for decades. New blood might actually keep this whole thing going for many years and is the purpose of forums like this.

Sage advice. Nothing like praise on a forum to encourage frenzied hoarding on the level of a Piranha attack. In the meantime, while you wait for new stock to appear for a nanosecond at one of the major online sellers, check out B&M's. Sure you'll pay more, but at least you'll have it to smoke. Support your B&M tobacconists. You're going to need them in the future.

Skip has been pissed that all of the SG blends have been impossible to get as well. He was so outraged when we asked about them that he threatened us all with stocking up on tinned Sutliff blends. So, we don't bug him about the empty shelves any more. That's just going to have remain to be the unspoken 500lb gorilla in the room. :puffy:

Hey Cosmic. Thanks for negative and condescending posts. Seems like the going theme here. Old boys club.

cellaring is smart. we can all agree on that.
I just popped open a 3 year old jar of FVF bulk. The flakes have turned jet black. Yummy

On that thought, what's the most aged Samuel Gawith blend anyone here has ever had and how was it?

I am currently smoking 2004 Full Virginia Flake, 2006 Best Brown Flake and 2012 St James Flake. All are very tasty and age extremely well.

I feel sorry you feel like this, I am a young pipe smoker myself (24 years old) with a limited budget and I assume you consider me as a millennial. Now, it is quite hard for me to properly stock up on tobacco since I am still a student and it is quite frustrating to see that the older generation who have been able to generate more money are buying up all the tobaccos like crazy. When I see people here posting how they buy 10 tins a month of one particular blend or buy 20-30 tins of a tobacco they like, I can only wish I was able to do something like that(and living in Europe, it becomes even more difficult. On the plus side, we do have a ton of Samuel Gawith here, they kind of almost are OTC's here). I hopefully still have 50 years + of pipe smoking ahead of me and it would take a seriously big cellar to have enough tobacco to last that long, some people here who might only have a few years to live have so much tobacco it can last for another generation.

I do not think the problem are the millennials, but if they are then you cannot blame them since they have to prepare for decades to come.

I have maybe close to a pound of Medium Virgina Flake from 2000. The golden colour has turned to a rusty reddish brown in the jar. It's good stuff, but I prefer aged FVF.
Seems around '06 or '08 that FVF changed somewhat to my palate. My tobacconist at that time mentioned there might have been a change in the Zimbabwean leaf used. I found that the gold foil tin liners were better tasting, imho.
Many of the SG blends weren't available in the USA until after 2001 or so unless you knew someone "across the pond".
Any of you members who collect the back issues of Pipes And Tobaccos magazine can read about the SG factory and several of the blends made there in the September 1999 issue.
Harris, I'd love to hear your thoughts about that 2004 FVF as compared to say some 2012 FVF. I realize there will be a difference given the age factor, but to my palate, the older just seemed better tasting somehow. Again, just my opinion.

Good heavens, Bazungu, brighten up. Have some fun. You don't have to buy the most expensive pipes or tobaccos to enjoy pipe smoking. We have many gentlemen here that are devoted to corncobs and Carter Hall. But, there are tons of stuff available out there at reasonable costs. Stuff trends, like McClellands and Samuel Gawiths. But, that doesn't mean that if you don't follow the trend that you are falling behind. Heck, discover something new. Make your own way.
You also don't have to have tons of money to cellar. It sure as hell helps, and I am not going to apologize for having capabilities. You'll get there, but this isn't a game full of winners and losers. If all you can do is three tins a month; one to smoke now, one to smoke in three years, and one to smoke in ten years, you will be doing better than most.
This site isn't some score keeping forum on who has the most-est. Have fun, talk about whatever you want. But, keep in mind that there are a whole bunch of eyes on this forum. Eyes that are looking for the next thing to hoard up on, or the next pipe to buy. I'm not being paranoid, I've just seen it time after time after time.
