Does everyone use Dupont's butane refill exclusively or have luck using refills from other manufacturers? Dupont's refills are somewhat pricy so I've been considering using other supposedly premium refills such as Xikar.
I bought one of those brass adapters. Been using Colibri premium butane

Same here...the brass adapter I use is the brass two step with an o-ring. Works like a charm. I dont know if its as clean but its the best I can get in France. Im using Colibri as well. Lights every time so far.

An experienced repair person in France simply suggests as good of butane as you can get. Obvioulsy Dupont, but he knows people arent gonna buy the stuff for refurbed units.

Only use brass adapters with an o-ring and fill with the lighter lid open.

The adapter I use here came from Germany and flawless.

I was bulking up in DuPont bottles when I would find them on sale. Once I bought the adapter, I stopped using DuPont fluid just so inconvenient with the whole screw in and off. Not k owing if there is any fluid in the bottle. You don’t really feel it makes a good connection with the refill. I have about 6 full bottles sitting

Adapter all the way.

@atwaterville Its hard to grab them at that price. Flippers and guys who refurb and sell them buy good deals in minutes. There are plenty when they get around 90 bucks. The going rate in France for one that is revised and nice is about 200. You can still get a good working model in nice shape for around 125 easily. They are just so plentiful since everyone used to smoke and it was a "French thing".

We will see how lucky I am when it arrives in a couple of days. If it leaks it will be a project. If not I will fit it with a pipe nozzle and go.

Got the 60 euro Dupont. I couldnt get it to work at first. Had to screw with it a bit. Now its working and Im burning through a charge of butane to cook all the old ghosts. It hasnt been used for a very long time. The upper seal is probably old but I dont want to take it apart. Seems to be working well now. I need to stop buying lighters and quit while Im ahead!

It's been so long since I've messed around with my Pipe-Flame nozzles that I goofed up my own setup. Above is actually what I've been calling a 'righty' setup, & below is what I've been calling a 'lefty' setup, with the nozzle 90deg ccw in comparison to 'righty'.

IMG_6791.JPG

I re-set it up as full 'lefty' tonight, but quickly made another change & went to what I had been calling the 'ambi' setup, sending the flame out over the corner 45deg between the other two setups.

A lot of the idea is to try & keep the lid not pointing back towards the user & out of the way as much as possible. But I also realized that laying the lighter over 90deg away is maybe more than I need to go as a lefty, & going only 45deg away still moves the lid more out of my line of sight as compared to running the 'righty' setup. But I also realized that running the 'righty' setup over the past day wasn't too bad overall, other than the lid in my line of sight of my left eye. So, I'm thinking of just retiring the old full 'lefty' setup, & re-naming the old righty setup to 'righty/ambi', & also renaming the old 'ambi' setup to the new 'lefty' setup:

I'm going to run it for a while to see how it goes, at least.

@EA-6B Ive run into that. Different Duponts are sometimes threaded differently so the nozzel lands wrong. I cured mine by taking a tiny dremmel tool and shortening the chamfer just a little. Then the nozzel will screw further around. Ive had to do that to 1 of three mods. I found you dont neem more thread...it just has to screw in a tad further. Its not pretty but its hidden.

Yup, the threads don't always start at the same spot on the nozzles, or the lighters. I have done basically what you described a handful of times & have sanded away the end of the thread on the nozzle so it would hook up at a different clock. It does work. Usually you can see how far you need with the nozzle in place & tightened, & then just remove that much from the start of the thread. But ultimately I found that just having a few extra nozzles on-hand to combat a wayward clocking is much more chill overall. And, I've always found a lighter for every nozzle. It's not like I've had any left-over that never ended up fitting anything.

Nice! Great pattern on the lighter, too.
:col:
It's fun to watch it flip between checkerboard, to horizontal lines, to vertical lines, to no pattern, & also to see it flip contrast for any of those.

Here's mine plated in silver, still needs a refresh though:

@EA-6B I like that pattern. Its one Im keeping an eye out for. I just got this one to add to the family. So far I dont think I need to revise it. Here are the before and after pics. I also put on a pipe nozzel. Collecting these is addictive but I want to keep it at 5 or under. I dont want to spend forever doing lighter maintence. Ive got three...I know of a couple of patterns Id still like to have.

A new YT video by Kirby Allison showing the manufacturing process of Dupont lighters at the factory in Faverges, France.

I remember Kirby many years ago when he was doing group buys on wood suit hangers
