I don't go to bars much anymore, but I do have fond memories of sitting in a bar room or pool hall and smoking my pipe or a cigar. Last time I was in either it wasn't allowed.
I can't recall the last time I've seen a smoking section in a restaurant but it has to be at least a decade or two since. Never bothered me much, although I generally didn't smoke while I ate.

When I had kidney stones I named my morphine drip Charlie and gave him a collared shirt and name tag to wear. I was under orders to walk around a lot to move the stones so Charlie and I would wonder out to watch the emergency helicopters land and take off. That‘s when I‘d smoke Charlie hated it and complained the whole time. Aw I miss wheeling Charlie around and the pretty nurses…
The only time I ever saw my father cry out in pain was when he passed a couple of kidney stones. The doctor had told him to go through a tea strained to catch the stones. I saw them and they looked like sand burrs. No wonder he let out a yell. puffy

I remember flying in the '70s when smoking on planes was allowed.
I lit up my pipe, only to be told by the air hosted that pipes were a no-no ?

I can't recall which tobacco I was smoking then, but I'm sure the room note would have been a vast improvement on the cigarette funk that was in the air.
Only cigarettes were permitted on US carriers--no pipes, cigars, bongs, etc.

I Remer taking a dollar bill from my mom, and buying her cigarettes. At the age of 9
I remember when I used to (I was @ 11 or 12yo) and buying cigarettes by the stick (when I couldn't sneak one out of Dad or Mum's packs)
Back then there was NO age limit on smoking.
And for impoverished urchins like me, stall holders would sell single sticks out of tins of 50.

I had totally forgotten how much attention a classic bug draws! People stop and stare and ask questions, talk about the one they used to have, honk or give a big smile and thumbs up. It really is good fun and it’s quite difficult not to smile whilst driving it. Of course there’s a fair amount of muttering under your breath too as you’re tinkering with something (again) that needs attention or adjusting or fixing. And you’ve gotta be Zen about oil spots. They happen. A lot. Fresh valve cover gaskets? Check! Leaks? Check! Sigh.

Looks like a 69-71 to me, and a nice one too.

There was a designated covered area outside one of the main doors called, "The Smoking Court." Students were allowed to smoke there during any free time (lunch, in between classes, free periods), providing that a parental permission note was on file in the office. It was usually full.
Same here in the 70's. There was an area on the east side of our high school, "Smoker's Corner". There was always a dozen or so kids out there having a smoke. We didn't have to have a parental note. The faculty didn't care, they were probably all in the teacher's lounge having a smoke at the same time. I didn't smoke cigs in high school, but my buddy and I smoked a joint often on our way to school junior and senior year.

I remember my local fish and chip shop doing the same, not that I bought em but rather remember the hullabaloo when they got caught. This was only back in the mid 90's when I was in primary school. I think they were only going for 20c a stick.

Fortunately for me, Dad left his pack of Benson and Hedges on his work bench and I'd wait until he had a fresh pack and pinch one every other week, for a while. Fond memories of waiting until I got off the bus and had a smoke and a stroll on the way home - felt like a luxury ?

Of course, as we all know, Lynx Africa bodyspray ( Axe in America? ) perfectly masks all cigarette odour.. ?

Erm, confession time: my best friend and I used to pinch a pinch of his dad’s tobacco and smoke that in post it notes on the school field.
There was also a teenage entrepreneur at my school, who made money out of selling tea leaves rolled in post it notes which, apparently, was supposed to do something other than blow your socks off.

Kids eh? ?

@verporchting Good ? to see a photo of your classic VW Beetle! I saw a 1950s bug with the oval rear window on a tow truck today while litter picking in Chesterfield.
Got 5 bags of rubbish!

I wasn't of smoking age when they stopped it, but I remember going out to out and people smoking inside. Wild times back then. Probably a good thing they squashed it though. Majority of people were smoking cigs anyways and they smell pretty bad in comparison to a pipe, especially if youre smoking an aromatic.

I did not catch this moment, since I am from a different generation. But judging by the movies, in those days the smell in all the premises was strong. The smells from burning do not disappear quickly, and the ratio in society is such that smokers are in the minority, this restriction seems fair to me.

I recently went on a business trip during which I stayed in a smoking hotel room and there was no control at all, I just puffed like a steam locomotive for two months. It was not noticeable to myself, but I received comments from colleagues saying how you sleep here. I think next time I will refrain from choosing a smoking room.
