I'm a fan of the wide banner-style signature pics.

The ones that take up a lot of vertical space can be distracting, but that being said, they don't bother me too much.

@Smiff- The guy banging away on the cowbell is from what is arguably one of the most popular and well-known skits SNL ever filmed.
EDIT: It's a comedy skit show.

I'm all for images in peoples signatures but lately some of them have gotten ridiculously large which can be distracting.

It's your call, they don't bother me since they only load once on a thread. So if you post multiple times only one has you signature. I use my logo as mine and resized it for faster loading, how ever it's on Photobucket so I don't know the actual size of it.
I do like a lot of them as they are entertaining to me, like the black frigate ones (I like ships and pirates). But these days it's hard to imagine folks are stuck with dial up. I figured broadband was available just about everywhere. Well felt maybe the bottom of the Grand Canyon where they deliver mail by mule.

I have great broadband service so they don't bother me, some are not as luck so I see where it could be problematic with page loading, however I would not be objective to size restrictions

For what it is worth, I definitely like the idea of some restriction. Some are just huge. Similar to the above, I don't mind a wide banner, but the tall images can be distracting. It's not a big deal, though. I wouldn't be upset if things stayed as they are, just that I think it could be better.

Images should be our profile pic, what we post in a message and the core of the website.
My 2¢

My take on the signature question --
- large pics are pointless, but not annoying
- animated pics are pointless and annoying (the visual equivalent of a kid blowing a whistle in a restaurant or movie theater)

I don't use an avatar or a signature, but the ones that are used are fine. IMHO some of the ships are a little big and this isn't Jaws.

While I enjoy reading the small famous quotes people use as signatures the giant billboards are getting out of hand . Don't get me started on how much bandwidth a animated GIF uses . I prefer to view art in museums .

I wish we have all connected to the internet through a dial up modem. Everyone would have said no to any kind of photos, ha ha.

Doesn't really matter to me either way, especially since they only show up once on a thread.

I can understand though how the whole bandwidth thing could be a problem for some people, so just scale the big pics down a little, kinda like pappymac's.

My .02 cents worth.

Kudos to Kevin for giving everyone a chance to discuss this. He gets a lot of flack for being a dictator, but I think this shows that what we think matters. You guys don't get to see how hard he takes members into concideration before making a rule. But, he doesn't take forum participants lightly.

I also don't care either way. The giant ships are a bit mutch, I prefered the old quotes that were on most guys tags, but I'm really good with either.

Georged hit it precisely when he said "the visual equivalent of a kid blowing a whistle in a restaurant or movie theater."
Those who are not bothered by such things can glibly pass them by but for those who it annoys have to bear the discomfort forced upon them by the few.
It is after all a tobacco and pipe forum and not a modern art gallery...however that is defined.
Regards,
Jay.
