I started at 19 but I've never really been one of those people who cares too much what others think. I'm too busy enjoying my pipe.
I smoke in my car every evening after work, not sure if that counts "in public" been doing it for some time now!
Every while I'll take my sons, ages 2 & 3 on a walk in the wagon and I'll bring the pipe along, I get some stares, because I don't live in a neighborhood that you would think of smoking tobacco in a pipe (in my "hood" they smoke weed, and who know what else in their "pipes")

I don't smoke too much in public. Usually outside of Starbucks during the midway point of walking the dogs. Probably should smoke in public more often. I've never gotten laughs or the "aren't you too young" (I'm 26 right now). Usually I get "That reminds me of the smell of my dad/grandpa's pipe" or "Wasn't sure I was gonna like it when I saw you light up, but that smells amazing".
38, but I've done so much weird shit that smoking a pipe in public is the least of my claims. I usually get smiles and nods and in one case I got a "Hell Yeah" but that was at a Biker bar.
It helps to have a beard. When people see a beard they assume you know what your doing when you light a pipe. The more gray in the beard the better so none of that "Just for Men" color stuff. Guys with gray in their beard do what they want.

mp31guitar - don't worry about the laugh... i just pretend that they are not there... its like with children - when you don't get them attention they want to get out of their laughing, they stop...
i just started smoking pipes in public from the day one i started smoking - never had problems... some people find it fascinating, some laugh or give strange looks... some pretend like the smoke is bothering them like that will kill them - what to tell... start smoking and forget about others opinion (unless someone is really bothered from the smoke - i also don't want to smoke near children or when i know someone has a serious problems with people smoking arround them)... a gentle smoker - something like that

I still feel uncomfortable when smoking in public but I am also growing the "I don't give a crap" attitude. I am really thrilled whenever I see someone smoking a pipe though. Last time it was at the parking at a mall. Some gentleman was enjoying a pipe in his car.
I started smoking in public from day 1 i was concious about it for about a week but after that it just felt natural to smoke my pipe and enjoy. I did once have a work collegue try to argue with me that i was polluting the atmosphere so i told him to F*%$ off and go somewhere else he didn't so i carried on smoking, he got the message in the end and left. Apart from that i have had people make comments that it isn't often to see someone smoking a pipe and that smells good. Before i started smokng my pipe i never noticed anyone in my local town smoking them either but just after i started i saw a few smoking theirs.
As Baronsamedi said, "Guys with grey in their beard do what they want". And I say "Ain't that the truth"! This morning I'm smoking in public. A large poker filled with Maltese Falcon and cigar flake. The only way to get comfortable with a pipe in public is to fill a pouch with your favorite blend, reserve your back pocket and never leave home without it. If a cop stops you, show what your carrying and then offer to meet up for coffee together at the next convenience store. Great way to make a new friend, and enjoy coffee and your next smoke with a bud.
I started at around 23, and never really gave it much thought. The only comments I would get generally dealt with wether it was weed or tobacco in my pipe, but my hair being past my shoulders and the Pink Floyd T-shirt probably had more to do with that than my age. Oh well. I have had a number of people tell me that they like the smell of my pipe because it reminds them of their grandfather, uncle, etc, but thats fine with me. It seems to make folks happy and think about good memories.
started @ 18 and i have always had an if you don't like what i am doing, bugger off type attitude. now that i'm an old fart i sometimes forget to put my pipe in my pocket when i go into stores.... it aint lit, it's just in my mouth. i have yet to have anyone tell me to take it out....
I started earlier this year. Have started smoking openly in public. My friends enjoy the smell, most civil strangers enjoy it, the scum who I thankfully no longer share a neighbourhood with would laugh but they do not matter, they gave up their right to be treated as humans long ago, when they became hopeless alcoholics, wife beaters and other kind of waste.
I smoke all the time in public, when I'm able. I've never gotten anything but positive comments from folks who actually know I'm smoking tobacco. Problem is around here everyone assumes you're smoking pot, all carefree and high in public. Yeah right. Even the cops come to give me trouble until they smell that it's obviously not marijuana, and then it's hilarious to watch them try to act all sly and turn around or pass you by like they weren't just coming to bust you. It makes my day :rofl:
I was going to reply to this post but Bootleg didn't approve of me quoting Nicki Minaj. Smoking a pipe in public isn't even close to the most shocking thing I do in public. Hell, around here, even smacking your kid on the ass when he's being a jerk is met with applause.
Yesterday was National No Bra Day and boy, talk about getting people's attention! I guess everyone's boobs look the same in a bra but they're all so different when free of their cloth and wire cages.

LOL, no pictures of me. Not because I didn't want pictures of me without a bra, but because I'm often bra-less if I'm just staying around the house. Yesterday everyone who knows me didn't even notice. This year I'm pretending to be Fiona from Burn Notice. *shrugs*
