Hhmmm. I think I was thinking of something different about public smoking - ie smoking a pipe in public. I like to go for walks and smoke.

I smoke what I like when I like to do so. I don't keep myself in solitary confinement so I am often seen out and about. I'm that nice fellow, you know, the one that always has his pipe with him....

Luckily I'm in an unincorporated area and the county only restricts smoking to enclosed public spaces and a fairly limited number of outdoor areas. However, I'm actually just outside of the city limits and if I walk about a quarter of a mile down the sidewalk and continue to smoke I will be violating the law. I have been in violation of the law on at least two occasions.

Been smoking since I was nineteen (bout a year and a half, now) and I've smoked outside from pretty much the beginning, and only from friends do I take any crap, but it's friendly crap, of course. Actually, no, I've had two people react negatively to my pipe, one I call "the bitch," who felt I should leave the area that I had been occupying for some ten minutes already because of "children," and the other was a guy who pointed out that I was smoking under a no smoking sign. I laughed and he left in a huff.

But mostly I get compliments and approving looks, though who knows how many people assume I'm just standing up to "the pigs" and smoking reefer.

back when i partook of the "green herb i found that in public was the safest way to smoke that stuff. being slightly paranoid i could always see them coming! and i know they are coming!!!
