I've been smoking my pipe in public since I was 17. I don't take one with me everywhere I go, but if I know I'm going somewhere where I can relax and enjoy it, I'll bring one. I've never really felt hesitant to smoke a pipe in public, though.

i always have my backpack with me, with the things that i deem necessary to have available to me. among whatever book or magazines i am reading, my sketchbook, travel paints, brushes and other asssorted good there are always at least two pipes, a pouch of tobacco, and usually a tin of another, and two nail tampers in case i forget to grab my favorite one. i never hesitate to smoke in public, and i have rarely ever heard comments. maybe being 6'2" 220 and tattoos taking about 45% of my flesh helps. i grew up the weird kid, and became a slightly strange eccentric adule. i have always done my own thing, so i don't notice if anyone else notices i am smoking a pipe. i just do what i do.

i did have a cop in downtown cincinnati ask me outright: "hey, do you have weed in there." i took a big old draw and said: "no sir. i use glass for that..." and kept on walking.

do your thing man.

I began smoking pipes at 18, and have always smoked them in private and in public. At first, I feared I'd be labeled as a "hipster" who is trying to be cool. Then I figured out. "I'm not one of those damn hipsters trying to be cool, so who cares?"
That said, I sometimes get glares from parents, as if I'm filling the air with arsenic and anthrax, and not the lovely smell of a nice cavendish.

Ain't that the truth! I've had little kids come up to me, asking what "that" is (That being a pipe). It's funny, seeing these little kids being very intrested in it till their parents yell for them to come. Of course, I tell them they have to be an adult to try it. It's also a bit sad when a kid doesn't even know what a pipe is.

I just started last week, my very first bowl was at the beach. I'm 18 but I've never really cared what people thought, still I got A LOT of strange looks from people. And of course the obligatory, "Can I take a hit?" from people thinking that just because I'm young, I smoke weed...
But I have also received comments saying that it's awesome (because well, it is). I have lived in upstate NY all of my life and have never seen a pipe smoker other than on television, so maybe that is one of the reasons I get so many weird looks.

Agreed, if so many of them hadn't bought into this idea that they take a single puff on a pipe and they will be immediately stricken with incurrable cancer idea, I think more people would do it. People have their weird way of looking at things though. I also ride a motorcycle, I wear gear and ride safely within my limits to minimize the risk, but it's always there. It's amazing just how critical people can be, "How can you possibly ride one of those?!?!?" and they refer to it as a deathcycle or a donorcycle. You look at the number of people that are severely injured or killed skiing, but no one is ever critical of that. Quite the opposite, they talk about how tragic Bob's death was, when he plummeted off the cliff because he didn't stay on the marked course, but get hurt on a motorcycle, well you obviously had that coming! Sort of the same overreaction you get from pipes, "Don't you care about the children?" WTF are you talking about??!?!

I have My pipe with Me all the time and smoke it as well, If one don't like it then stay away from Me and I'll do the same. I think there is room for smokers as well as nonsmokers, just stand up wind from Me and all will be good.

The most important thing here is be your self. I smoke where ever I like, keep in mind I respect nonsmokers and don't smoke when its not appropriate. The other day at work the architect, the general superintendent, and I were talking, I mentioned that I studied art in school. The Super said I never took you for an artsy type, to which the architect replied that pipe gave it away for me.

interesting thread
I often smoke outside, when I am going for a stroll or just walking in town...it DID take a bit of courage at first, but you soon realize that no-one really cares. Most people are too wrapped up in themselves to bother, and in a funny way I quite like it when people DO notice...where I live pipes tend to be an "old man" kind of thing, but I always feel reassured when I see someone else smoking a pipe in public....maybe the US is different, but Europeans tend to be a bit more chilled about this kind of thing, and certainly if you ever spend any time in France, Italy, Denmark etc. then it is more common to see pipe smokers in public

I started smoking mine in public as soon as I figured out how to keep it lit for more than a few seconds at a time :) The only thing I give 2 shits about as far as other people's opinions go is if I'm bothering them or not, not what they think of me. And if I'm in a designated smoking area or outdoors and it's bothering them then they're in the wrong place, not me. But I always get very positive responses about the pipes and tobacco anyway. The only time I didn't was when I was sitting down next to some woman in a bar and she asked me not to light up because she had just quit smoking. Why she was in the smoking section I don't know but I obliged her and she was gone 10 minutes after I got there so no harm done :)
