I was in the checkout line of a grocery store a couple of weeks ago. I watched a woman in the produce section pick up a carrot, handle it with both hands, inspecting it, and then put it back into the pile. She repeated this 3 more times before I shouted across the store at her. My blood was boiling. She didn’t seem to appreciate being called a selfish bitch and having all eyes on her. Her boyfriend/husband looked like he wanted to disappear. WTF?

Needless to say, wash any fresh produce carefully, there are morons around.
...everyone aplauded. Be better, people.

Great question. I hope some enlightenment comes from this tragedy. My gripe is any place -- usually in a store -- where everyone's actions are focused on one point. The other day, I was checking out at Walgreen's -- WALGREEN'S -- and was asked during the check-out procedure to key in my phone number to a digital pad for reward points. Every person who'd been in the store that day had touched that keypad. Of course, I said 'no, I'm not touching that' and the nice lady keyed it in on her register. But, the fact that such a 'vector' for transmission exists in that form in most stores is inexcusable. Especially, a store that claims to 'care about my health'

That kind of thing has to change.

I'm not even gonna get started on gas pumps.
I use my nose for these keypads.

Come on! Spring breakers are children with little or no respect for others. At that age it's all about "me." If you are holding them responsible for their actions and thoughts you are simply spinning your wheels. There's a reason even the military keeps kids that age under adult leadership 24/7. Some people even want them to exercise their franchise.

I am hoping that there will be a shift in priorities. People more fully realizing that the welfare of individuals is dependent on how we work together and care for others. In the long term, if individual interests are put ahead of those of others on too large a scale we can end up in a place where it is harder to come together when it is necessary.
The Hobbesian in me appreciates this optimism but is doubtful.

“The final cause, end, or design of men (who naturally love liberty, and dominion over others) in the introduction of that restraint upon themselves, in which we see them live in Commonwealths, is the foresight of their own preservation, and of a more contented life thereby; that is to say, of getting themselves out from that miserable condition of war which is necessarily consequent, as hath been shown, to the natural passions of men when there is no visible power to keep them in awe, and tie them by fear of punishment to the performance of their covenants...”

Gloves aren't absolutely necessary, but I feel more comfortable wearing them. I don't go anywhere without hand sanitizer. And none of this is a substitute for washing your hands for 20 to 30 seconds with soap and water.
Keep your hands off of your face and it's highly unlikely you will get the virus.

After 40 years in the restaurant industry, proper handwashing is a mantra that never changes, before we wore gloves and now after.

The new Burger King commerical is very well done and a great message, but in one version, the gloved cashier rests her hand on the POS. Frequent and proper hand washing trumps gloves every time (in food service). I do also keep gloves in the car for shopping.

I've always been appalled at the number of men who use public restrooms and dont wash their hands.

Spitting in public is also something I've never understood. The NFL/NHL and MBA players/coaches astound me.

I like to think of the new behavior people hopefully have been traumatized sufficiently to indulge in regularly. Hand washing. Not breathing on others. Practicing basic hygiene in general, and all while keeping distance, or as I've always thought of it, maintaining personal space.

I don't want to rain on parades or be a killjoy, but I am intrigued with the idea that various mass gatherings could be done virtually. I know most big-time athletes have trained to perform in front of crowds, but in fact, they could be almost as widely appreciated, as they mostly are anyway, via TV and devices. Likewise with musical concerts which do not really require the audience be present at all. And what's with these late-night TV hosts who can't do monologues without an adoring crowd or interviews except in person? What's with that? You have to have an adoring crowd on hand to be funny? I'm glad various family members and friends, some of whom are much sharper than the so-called professional comics, didn't require an auditorium.
I agree MSO.

As much as I enjoy going to baseball games, and desperately need to go to a Packers game, I'm in no rush to do either. I get the best view of the game, on my comfy couch, with the big flat screen TV, without all the obnoxious humans near by.

We should stop ignoring warnings that we could have an pan-epidemic even in ‘developed’ countries and set up robust national network systems to track, treat and coordinate nationally and internationally. This would hopefully then make universal lock downs a last resort nuclear option.

Fast food.
Ouch.

I'm a 40 year veteran of QSR industry, aka fast food (Roy Roger's Restaurants). We're the only game in town now.

Wherever you choose to eat, make sure they are demonstrating safe food practices. I eat at my stores every day. Other local places, not so much. The practices I observe at so-called fine dining curdles my limited hair, beware.

Our last restaurant visit before the lockdown, at a favorite local tavern bar was frightening. I'm forever skipping lime in my beloved Vodka/ Tonic.
