And don't forget, the woman from Talking Heads played bass with a quarter for a while because she liked the sound.
And you can find a bass tune thing online if you google it. Easy
No rules, man. Make your own, because that's how you'll get your own style

Thanks Briarbird. I'm not a serious player just find it a nice way to relax and the acoustic just sounds so good outside. Like they were made for it.

This is my main guitar:

yamaha-aes-620.jpeg

It's a Yamaha AES620. I like the look, tone and feel. I also have a MIM Strat (white), and a BC Rich cutaway acoustic in black and a handmade classical guitar. I'd like to get a Gibson Explorer, but haven't been able to justify it. :)

Uber; check out "Bass Tabulature"; it's a very simple way of writing music for stringed instruments. Basically, it will display four lines of music with a series of numbers - each line corrosponds to a string; and each number a fret. As for tuning; there are lots of sites on the net, several smartphone and tablet apps, but in a pinch it's always handy to remember that a phone dial-tone in North America is in the key of "F" (1st fret, E-string).

Uber, here's an online bass tuner with some tuning tips that has alternate tunings if you so desire.

If you prefer, leaning tablatures is easier for some people than regular sheet music. No key signatures, just which fret to play which string. Here's a quick intro.
Bass Tabs Intro
The most important thing is, if it's not fun go do something else. Unless you intend to go pro, don't force yourself at first. As adam said, bass is often more fun when you play along with songs, like drums. Schmitz beat me to the Tabs style of writing music.

Here is my latest acquisition; a 1981 Larrivee (formerly Quebec, Ca. mfg; currently Vancouver, B.C. mfg.) neck-through-body. Picked her up from a pawnshop for $60; guy obviously didn't do his research - Larivee electrics are extremely rare and high value; particularly the neck through body models as the headstock often breaks. Oh well, his loss, my gain...

@ uber: I'm a bass player. Been one for over 20 years and though I also play guitar, bass is my main instrument. I learned how to read music, but you can accomplish so much from simply looking at a chord chart and a little bit of listening to hear the intervals in the bass lines, you really don't need it, especially for rock music. Jazz or Fusion is another story. The key is to learn your scales, modes and arpeggios. Once you get used to hearing how those sound, you will start to recognize them in songs that you listen to every day. Here are 2 of my favorite books. They are very easy to read and have pix of the scales etc. based on the neck of the bass. The cool thing about bass is a major scale, minor scale or any scale has the same form nomatter what part of the neck you are playing.
THIS BOOK and THIS ONE are always nearby when I am playing.
You also want a tuner or you'll be a total clusterfuck. Android has a free app called G-String, which is a tuner that works OK. For Under $20 you can get THIS KORG TUNER which works for guitar and bass.

Hell I should have mentioned. That right there is a J.K. Lado bass. Beautiful instrument from a maker here in Canada.

I want this thing! It is a 1967 Hagstrom Impala. Wow. I bet you would sound like Dick Dale with a bunch of women in bikinis behind you if you played it.

Baronsamedi was talking about pedals the other day so I thought I'd share my tuner:

This tuner is amazing, it tunes all 6 strings simultaneously if you strum the guitar slowly. It can also do them separately and the LED readout is great.

Picked up the latest version of this old classic a year ago. Don't know why I waited so long. Chromatic pedal tuners are great.
