A number of Forums members have posted their restorations on pipes with severe oxidation on the stems, and the results are amazing. If I didn't know better, I'd think the photos were shopped. Old cruddy foggy nasty looking stems come up sparkling new-looking. So though I haven't achieved this myself, it is definitely possible and done regularly.
