Is it possible to darken vulcanite that has already lightened from oxidization? A friend gifted me a pipe and the vulcanite is very light colored. I applied some Obsidian but it hasn't really darkened.

If you remove the oxidization, it will, depending on the job you do, return to black. There are many tutorials on youtube that show you various methods.

A number of Forums members have posted their restorations on pipes with severe oxidation on the stems, and the results are amazing. If I didn't know better, I'd think the photos were shopped. Old cruddy foggy nasty looking stems come up sparkling new-looking. So though I haven't achieved this myself, it is definitely possible and done regularly.
Sand off the oxidized material, polish up the stem, and you will have a nice shiny black Vulcanite stem. You gotta get rid of the oxidized vulcanite.

Sharpie. OK, don't use Sharpie. But if turning that vulcanite black is frustrating you, you can sniff Sharpie.

Yeh, to bring back and estate that I have just gotten, I just use those micromesh pads. Easy peasy.

Amazon actually sells the micromesh pads for cheaper than the woodworking supply place here. Just ise them under running water and they’ll work fast and last for a long time.
Jewelers cloth can be found for a good price on amazon, but most jewelry stores will give you one with a purchase.

A lighter and a wet paper towel for the oxidation. Toothpaste for the mirror finish.

Not quite as dramatic, but I used the magic erasure and chapstick method this evening. Not bad for thirty minutes of work.
Evenly spread a tiny dot of toothpaste on them and buff it off with your thumb to raise the shine.?
