Popularity Of The Cutty Style Pipe.

I was just browsing some pipes and saw this:

I'm a big fan of the carver, and I love the oversize long shank pipes, but why is it tilted like a cutty?
Does anyone honestly prefer to not be able to see the tobacco in the bowl?
Sometimes I wonder if people make pipes like this just to be contrarian.

The cutty shape sure has been around for a long time so I would say pipe smokers must like the shape. I have several clay and one briar cuttys.

Looks like a forward canted apple to me rather than a curry, but who am I to judge...?

Not much forward cant to that one at all, but I don't mind a more cutty-like cant.

I like the looks of that. The way the the abbreviated stem works for me.

Anyways, to answer the question, is not that I  prefer a forward canted bowl. But i don't Raju dislike it either. I think the zulu/yachtsman/ woodstock is one of the prettiest shapes it there, followed very closely by a quarter bent Dublin. And a cutty and that other shape I can't remember what is called (cutty without the foot) are very similar if straight.

The beauty of so many different shapes and styles, ya know? A little bit of yum for everyone.

I tend to prefer a forward cant. I’m not sure why I would need to see the tobacco in my bowl while it’s in my mouth.

That pipe barely has a cant, and not to my tastes. I prefer a more extreme cant that some of my large bulldogs have. I'm not sure why anyone would need to see down into the bowl. Even on my regular straight pipes, I can't see down into the bowl.

This is one of my favorites with a cant. It is more noticeable when in clench. The bowl stands straight one. 7" long and a Large chamber too. I smoke this one quite a bit, especially when driving.

Someone already alluded to this but it bears repeating. The Cutty, like many things and a lot of terms in the English language -more than you'd think- stems from sailors and sailing. So it's very likely to have been considered the utmost in practicality over presumption at one time. Or, quite a lot of the time.

I'm a hanger, not a clencher as well. And I agree. Even my straight billiards. The tobacco barely stays in my bowl that sits upright! Lol

Once, I light my pipe and the initial tamp, the tobacco stays in. We have had members over the years that smoke their pipes upside down when it rains.

I considered trying that yesterday while working out how to smoke in the rain. All I found out was that my HIS pipe definitely has a vulcanite stem. And yet again, that pipes are better than cigarettes.

Can anyone really see inside a straight pipe when clenched? Why would someone need to? If I need to check to see if there is anything wrong inside the chamber, I can just take it out of my clench.
Otherwise, it is ok to just not like a style of pipe. I am not very fond of most bent pipes, myself.

Yeah, every time someone mentions seeing inside the bowl while smoking I come away feeling very confused. I'm pretty new but I have never needed or wanted to do that, nor can I see wanting to in the future. Perhaps it's hard to understand because those guys are aliens. With eye stalks. In which case; "bleep beep areep."
