I serve many masters.

Hail to the Kings.
@The Amish Tyrant Do you think I should see how long I can make a clay pipe of baccy last - or smoke one as fast as possible? You were saying you were impressed by my playing both sides. I'm not taking part in the Egremont Crab Fair fast smoke-off as it's the same weekend as Derbyshire Woodland Festival. A full day event is far more important to me than a 2 minute clay pipe smoke-off...
Still going to smoke a clay though as Jason the blacksmith of Wieland Forge will be there with the Vikings - he lit my clay pipe with an ember from his forge!

Here is another group of 5 1/2 'cutty' pipes with a few sub 5' pipes along with some very sharp cant'ed pipes all dating from the late 1870s till the late 1890s or a tad after 1900 but from Queen Victorias time.

I am not the 'Cutty' King! I just happened to smoke that style of pipe not only out of habit but because I happen to like the shape. It would be like saying All hail the Barling Bro to Jesse with his collection of Barlings!

Understood (and I was just being festive - besides, we all know the proper title is the Bard of Barlings).

However, your meerschaum cutty collection is most impressive both in size, history (how many Jack the Ripper detective pipes still exist), and color (except the ones that refuse to color unless you threaten them).

Hahahaha not yet! But that's essentially how I do it. Hangs from the gums. Good practice for when I go for dentures. Couple years ago I had 7 teeth pulled in one sitting. So I still just under 2/3 of my teeth remaining, but I know dentures are in my future.
Wow I've had one tooth pulled and they had to wrench the sucker out of my skull. My point let them put you under because there is something primally terrible about hearing bone cracking inside your head.

I was awake for a total extraction and found it fascinating. One of my front teeth shot across the room. It helped a bit that the dentist was a pretty woman but the entire procedure was painless.

It's not the bowl that's canted away from the stem, it's the stem that's canted towards your face when you hold the bowl in your hand. That's my conclusion. I find this shape
IMG_2852.jpg
extremely comfortable to hold while smoking. (And who gives a shit about looking inside the chamber while smoking?) The worst design would be a short, straight pipe that's too heavy to clench so you have to walk (or sit) around with your hand held up 4 or 5 inches from your face. I think the reason the cutty is designed the way it is, is because it takes little effort to hold the thing while you smoke it. The same is true for shorter versions like this

but a long curved-stem cutty is the most comfortable pipe to hold and to smoke. It hasn't been improved upon.

Absolutely no wish to be pedantic, much less start off a Bulldog vs Rhodesian type debate
BUT
Should “Cutty” be restricted to SHORT forms
And “Tavern pipes” be used for the long-stemmed versions

I think we all agree (despite Tom Eltang) that pipes withOUT the nub/spur/ appendage should be called Belges
