All hail the Cutty and Clay Kings!
@The Amish Tyrant I got into clay pipes after seeing re-enactors smoking them (Sealed Knot, Lace Wars etc). Going to the Derbyshire Woodland Festival this weekend; I'm going to smoke a clay (lit from the blacksmith's forge) while I'm there. I notice the 'cutty' pipes are 'clay shape' as I've mainly heard the term applied to short clays.

I’ve heard a couple of explanations of the stub of a clay cutty that I can’t remember. Does anyone know what the stub is for. I assume the briar version is copying the clay pipe.

Come to think of it, I'd bet the cant of the cutty shape is related to it originating as a clay.
You can't precisely drill through the shank to the bottom of the bowl with clay, I seem to remember reading they usually produce the air channel with a wire and a canted bowl makes it a lot easier to get the depth right.

My favourite pipe shape! Just bought a long stemmed clay pipe this afternoon, only paid GBP2 for it!
The stem is somewhere between a 'cutty' and a 'tavern pipe'. I like the look of churchwardens but they're easy to break - and the Viking / Redcoat blacksmith would have to come a bit closer to light my pipe:)

I like longer shanked clays as well, makes it easier to hold by the stem, don't really want to hold them by the bowl.

As to the shank of a clay, yes it's made with a wire when the pipe is formed. It's all done with molds:

I was awake for a total extraction and found it fascinating. One of my front teeth shot across the room. It helped a bit that the dentist was a pretty woman but the entire procedure was painless.

The process wasn't bad until they had to break the tooth from the jaw. It was dead and fused to the jaw. That sound triggered something primal. They hook you up to a machine that monitors your vitals my bp shot up for a couple seconds to a scary set of numbers.

@PaulRVA Nice photo; are you a re-enactor? Yes you definitely need to get a clay pipe for your collection. Have you ever smoked one? Would a gun like that have been used by or against Redcoats?
I think the Battle of New Orleans (U.S. Independence Day song) is very catchy but it's about Redcoats getting shot...

Nobody has brought this up yet, and I may just be uncoordinated with 5 thumbs....but I doubt is as I can remove visceral organs with precision. But.... with a forward canted bowl I tend to burn the bowl on the stem side while relighting. Am I alone, or all the cutty stan's going to castrate me over this comment?

That rifle would’ve been used against the Brown Bess and by Rogers Rangers and 75 years before the battle of New Orleans.
I need to get a clay soon, Ive never used one and being close to Williamsburg, Jamestown- Yorktown it’s kind of expected.

@PaulRVA I've got an Old Dominion Jamestown clay I ordered from Smokingpipes but I won't be ordering from them again after being stung by customs for tobacco. A shame as the Jamestown would have suited the Sealed Knot re-enactment (English Civil War) with its small canted bowl. The 'cutty' is my favourite pipe shape:)

Well yes and no. If you are a slob like myself you tend to roll the pipe on its side in your mouth and lite it thus burning some or all of the rim. With clays or meerschaum 'cutty' pipes this is to be expected and is probably some ancient pre-programmed mentally embedded action from the days of lighting your pipe from a gas jet light or one of those fancy Vesta matches made from phosphorus. @Chasing Embers method is probably great for briar pipes and more than likely correct but I am a creature of habit who just has no desire to vacate the 19th century!

Did you just call me a slob?

Maybe I can figure a work around for you.
