Pipes Safe on Pipe Stand?

Is there any concern about scratching/damaging pipes on a wooden pipe stand?

I know briar is a dense hardwood, but I have some concern about scratching/damaging the finish and/or briar on the bare wood of a pipe stand. Im going to attempt to make a pipe stand out of oak, and was wondering if anyone had issues with pipe stands in the past.

I have modified an old pipe stand with some Plasti-Dip to help prevent damage to the pipes, but Im not convinced that the extra effort was necessary. As always, I appreciate the input.

The only concern I have is I keep the stand out of direct sunlight. I don’t worry about the rest.

A greater concern for me is the possibility of the pipe falling from the stand onto a hard surface. I keep my pipe on a bookshelf away from the dogs and they could drop a fair distance onto a hardwood floor if not kept secure.

I don't worry at all about any scratches from the wooden stand.

IMO, the extra effort was not worth it. Commercially available pipe stands are perfectly safe for your pipes. I’ve never seen one that wasn’t smooth wood or other smooth material.

Pipe stands need felt, they have racks with felt now at smoking pipes but I cannot afford yet because I bought too many pipes!

Mine just stay in cardboard boxes. They're fairly durable and haven't sustained any damage from such treatment.

I have some on racks, the rarely smoked ones, briars in winter time. The meerschaums sit in the ash tray, awaiting stuffing and smoking.

Yes. I dont keep Meers on a rack as l have knocked pipes off a rack before.

I thought about buying a spinning plate (lazy Susan style) for my round pipe rack.

My briars are on racks, my meers stay in their cases, and my Altinay I'm smoking gets its own metal folding stand, ready to smoke at any given moment.

And possibly easier for the full bent pipes. I had to cut one of my stands to accommodate an oom Paul. I should try that...

Oh, yeah!

Our cats are geriatric and have finally convinced themselves that the law of gravity is a permanent factor that doesn't need to repeatedly be tested for, so they don't jump up on shelves or bat anything onto the floor.

Kittens up to young adults can be a problem, though--they love investigating anything that looks like a cozy perch and generally have a deep-seated need to constantly make sure that gravity is still working.

I bought some round racks years ago from that WV pipe shop that have a built in lazy susan, they spin easily, quite convenient.
