I wound up getting 4 of Neal Harm’s Walnut 7 pipe stands, I needed the flexibility of being able to move them around rather then one huge one which I couldn’t have fit well on the shelves I have. The stands are really quite nice, not too pricey, and have felt for stem and bowl to protect those smooths.

Is there any concern about scratching/damaging pipes on a wooden pipe stand?

I know briar is a dense hardwood, but I have some concern about scratching/damaging the finish and/or briar on the bare wood of a pipe stand. Im going to attempt to make a pipe stand out of oak, and was wondering if anyone had issues with pipe stands in the past.

I have modified an old pipe stand with some Plasti-Dip to help prevent damage to the pipes, but Im not convinced that the extra effort was necessary. As always, I appreciate the input.
No it shouldnt damage them but if you like you can glue a bit of felt on the bottom etc

I store all pipes stem down that way they do not fall out of racks, easier to remove, shows grain instead of bore. Added advantage is any moisture drains into stem for quicker drying time.

I'm sure some pipes have been nicked going in and out of racks, but not often. Most scratches and nicks and worse happen in handling pipes, mostly in dropping them. That's an advantage of blast and rusticated finishes that tend to conceal any minor damage. I'm not one who wants every pipe to look brand new. A little wear, a blessing of patina, makes a pipe more user friendly to me. After every smoke, I clean a pipe up and polish it a bit. I scoop out ash and clean out the chamber with a paper towel avoiding cake build-up. This retains the inner diameter of the chamber, eliminates the need for reaming ( I don't own a reamer) and reduces any ghosting.

I'm waiting for this 3 pipe stand to arrive tomorrow. I'll keep my Altinok meers on the stand. The stand will be on my desk with the stand against the wall. I don't think I'll have any problems with the pipes falling out or damaging the stems.
