Sorry guys, can't talk now. I am engrossed in a heavy political discussion on one of the Baconmagazine forums. Those people are just way cooler than you guys are.

I think that if a post is about tobacco taxes, then it falls under the umbrella of "tobacco legislation" and is allowed. Because there aren't many on this forum who believe taxes should be higher, you're not likely going to get different opinions on a thread like that.
The type of political discussion that should be verboten is "Republicans suck" or "Obama sucks" or ad hominem attacks in general.
I don't know why gun control comes up so often on this forum, as in my mind it has precious little to do with tobacco. And why can't threads having to do with health or second hand smoke or whatever continue without someone turning it into a debate about ObamaCare or some crap? Who the f#€k is Obama anyway? I don't give a rat's ass.

Its very sad that men can't discuss at freewill any subject because it can not be done in decency. Egos, and self-righteousness must interfere and cause discord. Has anyones opinion ever been changes by pompous rants or know it all banter? No. So why do we wish to engage in such behavior when trying to win a mind over? Sad state indeed. And when decent men can't observe the rules of gentlemanly debate it is evidence that we must be regulated, and thus shall never know true freedom.

I'm reminded of the old line where the gentleman says, "I'm not interested in politics." And - was it Trotsky who replied? - "Ah, but politics is interested in you."

With Necron's insightful comments, I leave you to you own devices.

It was worth a try.

I don’t believe anyone suggested that politics as it is related to pipe tobacco cannot be discussed on this forum site. There is already a specific forum dedicated to that very subject titled: Tobacco Legislation. I think the consensus, and rightfully so, that anything outside of that subject and of a political nature be kept out of this site and discussed on other forums that are dedicated to open political discussions. There are plenty of them available and feel more than free to discuss them there, but not here. Quite simple is it not?

Peck had it right on the money in his first post in this thread, and Jason's post was also a winner. It is extremely difficult to discuss issues of this sort calmly in a text only environment, with a large group. In a very small, strictly controlled group, yes, it can be done - but not in an open forum.

"And when decent men can't observe the rules of gentlemanly debate it is evidence that we must be regulated, and thus shall never know true freedom.",Me.
"Ok . . .Ok . . . let me take a guess . . . Braveheart, right?", Peckinpahhombre.
No Peck, you. Inspired by you at least, not quoted from you.
Freedom of speech is the first tenant of freedom. Speech here must be regulated or moderated because the number who will use wiseassery rather than wisdom when engaged in discourse concerning matters of a debatable nature.

Because so many prefer the bully pulpit over the forum of discussion.
If men can not even participate in conversation in a civilized manner then what does it say about the rest of our actions? That we must be regulated and watched and governed by others.
So consider the way you respond to others and gain insight.

necron99 - perhaps you could shed some light on what you are talking about?
I seem to have done something that pisses you off, so why don't you just explain what that is, using clear and concise words that all of us non-philosophers can understand.
Specific references to my horrible conduct would be helpful because I really want to improve and become the man that you want me to be.
Many thanks,
Peck

No you haven't pissed me off or even as much as aggravated me in anyway. Sorry if I made it seem so. I was just using the "braveheart" wise crack as an example. No harm intended, good sir.

Come to think of it. This little misunderstanding could also be used as an example as well. And to think, I thought I was being civil.

No, you were being perfectly civil, but you really have to help me improve so that I can become a better man. Braveheart is a multiple academy-award winning picture and won best picture. It was a damn fine movie and I didn't mean for that to be a wisecrack - if anything, it was meant as, and should be construed as, a compliment.
Perhaps you could assist me and set out some guidelines that I should consider before making a post. That way I can refer to it each time I am about to write something on here. I would be grateful if you could keep the sentences short and the concepts simple, for my benefit. Unfortunately, I have a very low IQ and often have difficulty with large words and complicated concepts, so the simpler you could make it the better.
Many thanks,
Peck

Again no offense was intended. I simply wanted to show how one wise crack can deteriorate a conversation as this one certainly has. At least between you and I. Please accept my apology for offending you as it was not my intent.

If I wasn't offended I would want my money back! Peck your post reminded me of Joe Pesci saying "Do I amuse you? Do you find me amusing…" absolutely class act chum!
