Yeah I hear you loud and clear, the snark is uncalled for, and counterproductive, really. I'd be willing to wager that more than half of those types glean way more enjoyment bragging about their cache than actually imbibing in it.
There are a lot of threads I don't get around to reading, so I'm unaware of any actual "snarking" or bragging about personal cellars.
As far as I know we all just did what we were advised to do with the looming tobaccopalypse and stocked up to have what we enjoy smoking.
Can you point me to anyone here seriously saying that they're somehow superior because of their cellars? That just seems absurd. It's just fucking tobacco.

I recall a couple of these back around when I first joined the forum, end of 2020. Don't recall specific screen-names, but I do remember something having to do with the discontinuation of HH Acadian Perique. One guy was lamenting he didn't stock up, someone else said something in rather poor taste...it wasn't overt, like outright bragging, but it definitely had an attitude of superiority behind it. I don't remember much more than that, other than that it got locked fairly quickly.

This is rare on here, though, at least in my four years' time anyway. Perhaps this is something that occurs more frequently on other platforms. Everyone here for the most part seems pretty down-to-earth. Of course, I realize I'm now setting myself up for some terrific mudslinging event forthcoming... :ROFLMAO:

Yeah I can show multiple examples from some of the top members here, especially in response to newer members' concerns over the Sutliff situation when it broke, but it's not worth my time. Old Sable here is just always gonna disagree with me on anything and everything, I've come to accept lol

Yeah, that's unfortunate.

Fact is, I didn't really start building a cellar until 2013, and pretty much stopped around 2019. Before that I just went to my local tobacconist and bought what I needed for a few weeks at a time. Then tobacconists started closing up.

So I don't have that much in the way "golden age" blends except for a what that I bought in the aftermarket when you could buy "vintage" tobaccos for less than retail, because they were "old", and some gifts and trades.

Woodsroad has hit the nail squarely on the head. Machine harvesting is efficient but it mixes ripened leaf with not ready for prime time leaf. So as a result, quality has dropped.
That doesn’t mean that there’s no quality leaf being grown, but it appears to be largely in other countries where hand picking still continues and the leaf develops bolder flavors.

Having been a pipe smoker since 1971, I can attest that in my experience the overall quality has declined, but every era has its wins and losses. Crap has always been around. The average blends of the ‘70’s and 80’s had a richness and smoothness that is very rare today, and you won’t experience it by picking up a 30 or 40 year old tin of legendary “whatsis”.

Modern versions of age old blends are faint ghosts of the originals.

On the other hand, there are many blend types, like matured Red Virginias, that came into their own later, and inventiveness has brought a great many interesting and enjoyable blends to market in recent times.

There’s also increased access to imported blends made by talented blenders, using empire leaf, that are excellent.

The other part of this is that people imprint on the products available to them. They enjoy the blends they have and calibrate between excellent and meh with those blends.

It’s kinda useless to bang on about long gone tobaccos. You’re not going to be smoking them.

The best of times and the worst of times relate to your times.
I think this also hits the nail on the head. In the 60’s the Beatles and David Bowie and the Stones and Dylan and Led Zeppelin hit the scene but they were all considered crap by the older generation when compared to their respective good ol' days.

Sorry guys……a little bit off topic…..man your pic always cracks me up. I know its probably not you, but I’m going to think it is, even if you say its not, as thinking of that fellow walking down the street with a pipe just cracks me up and brings a bit of joy to my day!

OK……back to the thread and sorry!
Ha! It’s true, I am not Macho Man Randy Savage, but if I were, you bet I’d be rocking that garb and smoking a pipe haha 🤣

Every generation thinks the other generation is crap in some way.

You've been here far longer and more often than me, you've either seen it already or have chosen not to but idt anything I show is gonna change that conclusion.
Plus, just too many 9-10 hour days in the office and my friends are ready to meet up for the rare match of Halo we barely get anymore...
I know my di.. er, post count doesn't merit me enough respect for an equal footing with some, that's fine.. I have other life pursuits than this board.. heck, just look at my post count 😂 ✌️

Seen tons of great cellar pics and advice here, never seen anyone lording their cellar over anyone - maybe confusing some great views and/or good humor for something else?

As my old pappy used to say, “If at first you don’t succeed, try something else.”

But really... If you're a hardcore smoker, or not old. It's real hard to stash enough to last the rest of your life.

My consumption of all tobacco products would require me to stockpile of 2000 lbs, to last 50 years.

Where would I even put the jars?

I ain't saying it can't be done... and I'm giving it the old college try, but damn. My wife thinks I'm a nut.

I always feel kinda bad when people say they have enough for the rest of their lives.

Sounds like "I don't have much time left" to me.

But some people die young, and some people don't smoke very often.

YMMV

Currently, farming of any type is not financially viable without massive state-sponsored subsidy. As with most other crops, consolidation of industrial scale production has turned to mechanization domestically and in particular in emerging markets overseas.

The purpose of a company is to maximize its profits by manufacturing a product as cheaply as possible and selling as much of it as possible. To the extent, if any, that product quality constitutes a market pressure, manufacturers will maintain premium products or lose customers. Absent that pressure, the bottom line is a race to the bottom.

Since the OP brought up alcohol, I think Bass Ale (and several others) are a good example. Bass was a premium ale as late as the 80s - 90s. It was sold to Interbrew, Anheuser-Busch, and is now made by Coors (Molson). I gave up drinking long ago, but way before then I gave up drinking Bass, Newcastle, Boddington's, and Pilsener Urquell because, to my taste, they are a pale shadow of their former selves. It's been a few decades, so I gather the differences transcend "seasonal variation" in hops and barley, and (again, in my opinion) likely represent a race to the bottom to produce more beer, more cheaply.

Like brewing, tobacco production has become more vertical and less diverse, with less hand-intensive labor and meticulous craft in practice. Tobacco production involves raw material and process, and while the process may remain unchanged, I personally challenge the notion that all tobaccos are equal, particularly where it concerns Virginias. From a manufacturing perspective it may seem tempting to view tobacco as a substrate, essentially cellulose fiber, that you can spray with syrups and flavors and create a desirable product.

People might buy it, but if you've ever eaten farm-to-table you know that two chefs reading the same recipe will make vastly different products if one focuses on sourcing quality ingredients for their cuisine. If you've ever traveled to France or Amish country and tasted the butter and asked yourself "why does my butter suck?!" you'll have some idea what I mean.

You're not a snob for expecting more from your tobacco, or your butter or your beer. Don't be gaslit into thinking otherwise.

You answered my question. I asked for evidence. You respond with post count envy, and Halo.

I could care less, but you keep flogging this horse like it means something. Guess it doesn't.

We have had a few people who "bragged" about their cellars, like Harris, but that was part of his act and was always meant in jest..
A number of people here have shown off their cellars and pipe collections. It's not bragging, just enthusiasts responding to requests by other enthusiasts.

Here's the Show us your cellar thread:
Here's mine. It's biblical:

You see this in anything that has fans. Go on music forums, or look at bands that have been around decades. "Their older shit was better" is a very common sentiment. Sometimes it is true of course, but often it's more people being mad that they didn't just release the same album over and over... but then if they did that, people would bitch about that too.

William H. Macy once said in an interview how he hates when people say old movies were better. Same shit... the proportion of good to bad movies was about the same, but those that were around back when "things were better" are suffering memory issues where they forgot the crap and remembered the good, so when they think back, they forget what the actual ratios were of good vs bad. Then people who didn't exist "back in those days" who watch older stuff think it was all good, because that's all that gets played from those times, so it appears things were better on average than what they actually were.

I own two Harley's and ride, you know how many FOGs I've seen complain about the cost of a new Harley and how Harley used to be for "the working man"? Except, that was never true and adjusted for inflation, Harley Davidson motorcycles actually cost less these days than in the past.

Some of it is rose-colored nostalgia glasses, sometimes it's becoming accustomed to something so much that you hate things when they change, sometimes it's bad memory. Not all change is good, but not all change is bad either... most is actually probably lateral, but bias makes fans think it's either and improvement or detriment, depending on their own bias.

Most stuff actually doesn't change that much over time. People will say stuff like "why is everyone so dumb these days" but, that same sentiment has existed since forever, every decade there's a perception of change when there wasn't any change, just becoming more aware of what always already was. That's not to say things don't change, just a lot of when people say stuff about how things "used to be", it's mostly not true.

So you have to take any claims like that with a grain of salt—they could be true, or false, or only partly true.
