My wife and I have been in talks about procreating for a couple of years now, and we recently decided that we're going to start trying here in a month or two. We've been making both financial and health considerations leading up to this, and now that the time is nigh, my wife has requested that I significantly reduce my alcohol and tobacco consumption just to be safe and make sure that everything is A-OK down there to reduce chances of our spawn having any complications. To this, I have no objection, and I'm sure it would do me some good to only smoke/drink a couple times a week (if that) instead of almost daily.

But since it pertains to pipe smoking, I wanted to ask on here and see what other's thoughts are on this situation. Were you smoking when you had your kid(s)? Did you cut back, or not change anything at all? Was it even a consideration? Once you had a kid, how did it affect your smoking?

I was smoking about 2 packs of cigarettes, and drinking a 12 pack of beer a day, and smoking 4 or 5 blunts when I heard the news of my baby boy.

I pretty much quit drinking/smoking weed after he was born, but I smoked cigarettes on the way home from the hospital.

My wife at the time quit smoking, until about the 7th month... I came home from work for lunch and the house was full of smoke. I laughed about it, and life just went on. My boy is totally healthy and sharp. So IDK... "They" say a lot of of shit that they don't know.

Talking? In a month or two?

90% of the human population was concieved on tobacco and alcahol. Ha ha. Just do it! It's fun! Why wait, just start "doing it"

I hope that helps. puffy

I would expect nothing less from the proprietor of Funkenhouser's House of Funk.

Yeah, it's been quite a build-up. Neither of us are big kid people, so I think that's a part of the delay. I know it's different when you have your own, though.

To your other point: I'm definitely more an easy-going, come-what-may kind of guy. My wife, on the otherhand, is much more of a worrier. And she reads a lot of stuff on the internet, unfortunately.

I got a head start on preparing for parenthood by smoking weed and tripping balls for about a decade straight before knocking up the Mrs. -- my 3 boys are currently getting straight A's and are healthy as horses, **your mileage may absolutely vary** lol

My oldest recently surpassed me in height, that's been a really freakin' weird development.

I didn't start smoking a real, proper pipe until they were good n hardened off at ages 8, 6, and 6 (twins) -- now they're teenagers and think of my pipe as 'old man wizard shit' ...they do not like the smell of cigars (which are strictly an outside thing, I smoke my pipe in my office).

I don't think I would've had time to smoke a pipe when they were smaller -- too much shit going on and I didn't have a long commute, yet. But, when there's a will, there's a way.

Best wishes on your future endeavors! :)

I would think it would be a weird experience when your kid outgrows you. I remember thinking it was weird when I outgrew both of my parents.

I hope my kid also refers to pipe smoking as 'old man wizard shit'. Haha.
I’m not much of a drinker to begin with but I was smoking a pack a day when we had our kids. Both are healthy and sharp teenagers now.

I’ve never heard of smoking or drinking having any effect on conception. Is this a new thing now?
I haven't either. I'm sure she read something that prompted the conversation, so I'd say: yes, it is a thing now.

First two replies covered it all....lol

I have five kids....my wife stopped smoking immediately, but she was never a drinker. I quit cigarettes after the second and switched to pipes, and to this day I've kept all my vices except cigs.

All healthy and fine....though, we had twins and the the girl was a mooch in the womb and boy was a bit smaller, but he fattened right up and all is well.

Womb mooch. Lol.

Glad the kids are all healthy!
So much danger from foods, drinks and breathing. I dont know how some of us lasted this long. Im of the mind that worrying about all this, what I consider nonsense, is harder on people than what they are worrying about.
That's the age of the internet for ya.

Oof. I was not aware tobacco or alcohol were teratogenic or mutagenic through sperm? As a matter of fact, I do not believe they are. Sounds like she's just looking for an accountabili-buddy while she dries out.

Personally, I enjoy tobacco and alcohol and never considered giving them up because my wife was pregnant. She also never asked, although she herself quit smoking and drinking leading to the pregnancy.

I didn't smoke around my pregnant wife or children and to be sure, and I had less time for socializing the pregnanter she got and once the kids were born. To me, I don't understand her proposition - it doesn't seem to be grounded in science or reason.

You may be right about the accountabili-buddy thing. As for science and reason, I don't think I would get that deep into it with her. I figure if it makes her feel better about things, then I can make a change for a while.
"Procreate" .... "spawn" ... Sounds romantic.

Looks to me like you're headed for "hiatus status."

You'll log back in on about 5 - 10 years and tell us all about it.
Haha, I guess we're just jokey people. These are the kinds of words we throw around when we're together.

@Snook - I rather suspect that, if you're looking for second opinions to confirm your lady's anxiety-fuelled aspirations of abstinence, you've come to the wrong place

My parents both smoked and drank throughout (though I think they both probably stopped briefly during my actual conception), and I'm OK. I have no kids personally (that I ever got to hear about, anyway) but Mrs Badger conceived, carried, bore and nursed my stepson whilst smoking and drinking (and, I might add, doing dope and acid), and he's always been a fine, healthy, clever lump of a lad. Lad, I say - but he's middle-aged now...

We appear to be entering a New Age of Puritanism. Bugger that, is my twopennyworth.
