Please tell me there’s something out there for maybe <$30 that lights as reliably as a $2 bic. I’m 0 for 2 so far - zippo side insert and a $12 Promise side flame, each just north of worthless.

Never had an issue with even a regular Zippo, but matches are another option.
Strange. I have a zippo pipe lighter, and it works perfectly. That's about the only cheap lighter I could find that worked.
I just sold my wife's used Kiribi on EBeast for $39 (she smokes a pipe). It had some cosmetic issues, but functioned flawlessly.
Zippo. It's not the lighters. They are tools. You need to learn to use them.
I just started using matches only a couple of days ago, and I prefer them over lighters now. It seems to be a nice cool light up and better overall first light for me anyways. Now to figure out what to do on windy days.Never had an issue with even a regular Zippo, but matches are another option.

Vertigo lighters by Lotus. In that $20-$25 range and very reliable in my experience.

If you mean the butane zippo insert pipe lighters, they are hit and miss. You can’t go wrong with a regular fuel pipe insert though.
If a cheap Bic does it for you, why spend more?
That said, many of us have several of the eBay S.T. DuPont counterfeit lighters, and they've been great. It looks like eBay is cracking down on them because the variety of styles has been drastically reduced. And the price has gone up. Do some creative searches, though and you'll find more.

I've heard of those, but haven't looked into them.
Can you recommend a good one? I've seen many that take multiple attempts to light.
Just bought this one per your post here and the previous thread you linked - have used another Chinese brand one that was a generic cheapie that has an angled flame for the past 4 years, bought two and one worked and the other didn't - so was looking for a new one. I have tons of Zippos, a few old boy knockoffs, and other oddball lighters. The best one I have for pipe smoking is this one: Honest Pipe Lighter
What I like about that lighter is it gets in the bowl well, and I don't seem to char the rim that much. I feel like I char the rim more with Zippos, even the one I have with the pipe insert.
I also use hemp wick. I like this because it's like a long match. Just pay attention while it burns. When you put it out, it smells like a birthday candle.
