I'm interested to see if they'd cured the well-known Peterson flaws.
Gripe gripe gripe... like you really need a draft hole to enjoy these beauties. You Peterhater.
Ha ha, I am just "into" the straight ones, so drilling probably isn't going to be an issue, since it's easier to drill a straight. But, their bowl coatings... bleu-ech... but, luckily, I've found that you can wash that coating out.
My Rua took a lot longer than my Regaire to start giving me the full tobacco flavors, but I attribute this to not fully washing the bowl coating out down the shank. Just be careful, because the outside coating seems to be water based, or at least dissolves easily in water. My red stained Rua became pink, but I just washed it all off and re-stained it, easy peasy. But, hell if corncobs can come ready to be fixed with Elmers Glue, a Peterson needing some stain work isn't that big a deal to me. puffy

Most of my Petes are lower end, price-wise. I have only one P-lip. I've been remarkably lucky, with no quality control glitches on any of my Petersons. I don't know if there is any correlation, but I've wondered about it.

I was looking at these a couple days ago and there are some nice pieces in this line. The couple that members posted here are particularly attractive examples. That $240 price tag for the spigots made my eyes water, though. I’m not saying they ain’t worth it, I’m just saying I ain’t paying it. I hope the ones you all purchased smoke as nice as they look, because they look damn sexy.

@Chasing Embers Yes Mike has had some high prices, but they are coming down. My Bamboo Apple was only a few dollars more than these Petes, and they are no where near the quality.

My Peterson: Newgrange Spigot (124) Fishtail, is the same pipe and quality, and it was $70-$100 less.

These pipes are not $240 pipes, when I’m holding the same thing, with only a different color and blast.

I’m certainly not Jim, but I have been looking at pipes from all around the world for the past 2 years, hours daily, and I don’t buy it, these pipes are not $240 pipes.

I love the history of Peterson, I have one of their pipes, but I would never recommend anyone wasting $240 on these pipes.

Go look at what Walt Cannoy makes in the same price range. I even had a Castello last year for the same price, that blew these Pete’s away.

Walt’s pipes in the same price range blow Petes away!

If people are buying into this, then you need to get online and look at the pipe sellers and makers out there to see prices, and what you can truly buy against prices of SPC, and these Petes.

Last I checked Mr. Howell was selling for $300...

Anyhow, a few sites every Pipe smoker should know;

I’m not trying to put Peterson or anyone down, but some of these pipe prices there are really starting to get ridiculous.

The odd thing is that SPC sells a lot of pipes from other makers, so at least on their site you can make comparisons, and in time, you can begin to tell, what to expect at a certain price point.

Look at all these pipes on their site in the same range or less.

When you understand all these pipes I’m showing as an example, then, the Pete prices don’t match up, they make no sense.

Tinsky $180 - wow!

Tinsky - $295 (This pipe is more than just $55 better, in craftsmanship?)

Ashton - $270 (Only $30 better?)

Caminetto - $279 (Only $39 better?)

Genod - Most of these are better quality, they are just plain looking, and a lot cheaper priced.

This Genod for only $70 is just as good a smoker if not better for only $70! (Fancy blast and some silver costs $170 more?)

Jacono - Many in the same price range.

Just look at their own site to compare, and the list goes on.

Savnelli makes better pipes at these prices too!

You know SPC is a forum sponsor, right?

Of course, as I mentioned, I’m not here trying to put anyone down. I’m only trying to point out, that when you compare other pipes they sell, the Price Matching doesn’t make sense, that’s all.

Even as I wrote this, I really couldn’t believe that Tinsky Bulldog they have was only $180. I better grab it before it goes! LOL ?

But seriously the Genod Pot for only $70 is as good as a Peterson over 3x-4x the cost.

So I’m not here making up stories, just trying to tell people, to look even at SPC’s own site to make comparisons.

P.S. I’m done... :)

Im new but I don't think castello should ever be mentioned in peterson comparisons. Way different market and animal.

Man, some of you guys are Dime Store shopping these pipes. I think that Peterson has done a great job of shaving off expenses to keep their new products low for the working class market.

Yes, there have been times when it has run through my mind that this or that pipe may not be worth the price asked, especially on some of the more humdrum pipes on the artisan market. But, jeez folks. To say that Peterson is over-priced... WTF. I think that I would just not say anything as to look that frugal or poor. There's nothing wrong with being poor. I just wouldn't be bragging about it. puffy

When you are comparing prices between pipe companies and makers... there is so much more involved that it just becomes apples to oranges.

I think they are talking quality and value though? I hear a ton of complaints about quality from peterson so in relation to price the value is low compared to other cheaper brands that do not suffer from the aforementioned issues.

I'm also a member of a RV/Travel Trailer forum. I can guarantee you that every time someone posts about they're new tow vehicle or trailer, someone will post the better alternatives to that truck or trailer. Or how that particular RV/camper is over priced and not what they used to be.

I say, it's your money, spend it how you wish.
