Pretty sure he didn't post here often enough to be a "forum character", but I have gone through all of neverbend's contributions. The thing is, I know from very lengthy emails he sent me back in the 90's (I remember one particularly insightful chain about Upshall that started when I was trying to network Windows 95 in my office) that only a fraction of what he knows has shown up here. Suffice it to say that much of my deep appreciation of the work of Ken Barnes and the late Giancarlo Guidi is due to him, but he also had tremendous insights into the last days of true London based tobacco blending (the highly regarded Elephant and Castle blends were made by McConnell: Marble Arch had the integrity to shut them down when McConnell was sold to the German chemical industry), as well as the true but underappreciated artistry of people who could (and can) do first class repairs, like Rich Lewis.

I think that folks come here as soon as they are interested in getting into smoking a pipe, and they either stay long enough to get their form down and then bail out... or if they don't leave they find themself with a wall full of pipes and all of the spare space in their closets full of tobacco. Because once you are smoking your pipe to a full enjoyment, what else are you going to talk about, unless it is cellars and pipe collecting? Because if you have your tobacco tastes set, and your pipe technique down, and you are not looking to get further into the PAD and TAD, then all that is left is Starcat.

Mr. LC will not be back unless Kevin has a change of heart. They got into an argument, Troy was having an especially bad day, and things were said that left Kevin little choice.
Couldn't be a sadder situation, imo. Mr. LC is a legit Pipeworld treasure.
Because this needs to be said again.

We're all on a countdown to going full Starcat? The inevitability of death is bad enough, and now I find out about this?

Never forget Starcat!!! Yes, we miss people that used to post but know that two of the names mentioned don't even smoke pipes anymore. Not smoking a pipe and hanging out on a pipe forum would be like taking a vow of abstinence and then surfing porn forums.
Luckily, I won't be missed.

I'm still trying to figure out who Starcat is/were.
Thing I learned about pipe forums is that sometimes you need to take a break from them to center your inner-pipe smoking being. You have to keep reminding yourself that we are all different individuals with different backgrounds which have led to different opinions and beliefs.
Sometimes when you read something you think is absolutely ridiculous and wrong, you need to step away from the keyboard and light your pipe.

In the summertime, I almost always take a break. I have too many obligations between irrigating the crop, tending the garden, rabbits to harvest, canning, jewelry orders, my wife's hobby of doing stand-up comedy, and frequent drives to the beach with the kids in between all of that. Plus, as the days get longer, I find that I barely sleep, so I get a bit wonky. But, I try to drop in occasionally, if not to just make sure that Sable isn't causing any problems, ha ha.

Long story short. Starcat was/is a female pipe smoker, who is still listed as a member (assuming she wasn't a sockpuppet also). But, apparently she only ever posted when she was drunk. She had made a post eluding to Peterson pipes being overrated, and we had a forum meltdown. Her post was so obscure that it all depended on what order you put the words, whether you thought she was saying the Petes were overrated or weren't. So, after weeks of in-fighting, we all came together to create a work of art out of the thread. I can't remember the page count, but we had over a dozen pages of psychotic but brotherly obscurity.

But, we neglected everything else, and people complained. Management came in and deleted the thread, and drama ensued. One guy went off and started his own forum. Yaddi yaddi yadda, and this being the best forum in the world, This one continued to thrive. And, you know the rest of the story.

I can't remember if I was still a lurker or had actually joined when the Starcat thing happened, but it was a hell of an intro to this place!

Starcat was indeed entertaining. Some venting, mostly humor and a great way to transition from snow and ice to summer.
That it went on for so long was astounding. We carefully avoid politics and personal attacks (just barely sometimes) and the survivors were better for the experience.
And, while no definitive conclusion or accord was attained, we beat the heck out a couple of subjects totally unrelated to the original post.
Haja was simply tarred, feathered, mounted on a rail and run out of town because he had a narrow, oddly focused agenda. For all I know he was honestly pushing certain lighters. He never stood a chance!
