It's the jackpot at the pipe casino! All inspiring, but I too am especially taken with the rusticated Rhodesian. But they each sing a siren song. Good show, as the Brits say.

The red Clark Layton rhodesian is sandblasted.
I will say that I wanted to look at Ryan Alden's pipes but never saw him. I think he may have gotten hammered and not shown up.

I love that little Markel! Just the slightest of bends and flairs to compliment the angled rim of a sort of italic egg. A beautifully composed shape! Everything is just right; gestural yet restrained. Love it.

I would be remiss if I didn't post a link to this wonderful story about the beautiful Tsuge carver Kikuchi. Yes, I am smitten.

Thanks Fish.
The one pipe to me that stands out as a bit of a milestone is the Castello Shape 10. Smokingpipes just brought that one back from Italy when they visited the Castello factory. This one is a fiammatta that was actually in the Castello museum, but Keno let it go. I understand that he hasn't let very many specimens leave the museum over the years, so this is quite a coup. The angel hair grain on that pipe has to be seen to be believed. The picture above doesn't do it justice.
Here is a shot of that pipe along with another pipe in the museum - namely, the very first shape 10 ever made, complete with Ivory stem inlay. I thought the Castello knobs might get a kick out of this.

Wow, F*&$@&' awesome!
Your prolly getting to it but is that also your first your Markel? I remember chatting with you a while ago about his engineering being top notch. I've checked out some of his work since then but never in person. If it is the first, glad to see you finally got one.

That is my second Markle. I lit that one up at the show and it smokes wonderfully. Ernie is just a great guy. I was in the tent smoking my Parks' poker and he asked me about it. Needless to say, during the conversation the subject turned to his own pipes, and I had to buy one.
The show is quite bizarre, in a really good way. Numerous carvers and estate sellers set up in various hotel rooms during the show and you go to visit them and pipe shop. Some even ply you with alcohol, the universal lubricant.
And when you are in the tent having a bowl and a beverage, around you there are carvers selling pipes out of their briefcases. It is just nuts. Very difficult to control the PAD urges at the Chicago show. Luckily, I have exceptional willpower and didn't get too carried away.

And now matching dublin Cookes also, I'm in awe. lol
That sounds like a great time. I didn't picture the show to be that way. Also not that anyone needs the alcohol to be persuaded but I can't imagine having any type of restraint while floating in alcohol.

peck, thanks for the vivid description of the pipe carver scene at the Chicago show. That does sound pretty (what?) phantasmagoric? If that's not getting carried away, better have a moving van on call next time in case you do. You'll have to roll dice to decide in which order to smoke them.

Mso, for a pipe geek it is really crazy stuff. I came in on the Wednesday evening. That evening I went to the smokingpipes hotel room where I looked at some pipes, had a few drinks and several bowls, and left at about 2am.
The smokingpipes guys I met (Sykes, Shane, Ted and Josh) were just fantastic and we had a great time talking about pipes and tobacco until the wee hours. Rick Newcombe was there as well. Several carvers came in at various points, including Lars Ivarsson and his wife. I will confess I was a bit star struck by that.
Something every pipe geek should experience.

Most definitely !

To give an idea how crazy it is, I was there 5 days and never ran into you (that I know of).

I was really looking forward to meeting you. There were at least 10 other people I was planning to chat with and either never saw, or only briefly met with. I only left the resort for a few hours on Friday night, so that should give everyone some scale of the show !

Ryan, me and a couple of other guys walked around the center 4 times on the Saturday looking for you and just couldn't find you. We had assumed you were in a ditch somewhere and never made it.

Ryan,

I heard you got hammered and just sat around rambling like a madman...

“Awakened to life out of the night of unconsciousness, the will finds itself as an individual in an endless and boundless world, among innumerable individuals, all striving, suffering, and erring; and, as if through a troubled dream, it hurries back to the old unconsciousness. Yet till then its desires are unlimited, its claims inexhaustible, and every satisfied desire gives birth to a new one. No possible satisfaction in the world could suffice to still its craving, set a final goal to its demands,

and fill the bottomless pit of its heart.”
Please note it was Peck who started this rumor,

not me.

peck, freaking awesome blasts. Now the more I think about it the more I am determined to find some people, to clean out your entire inventory of tobacco and pipes. The value of your stuff is now worth it to me to invest 20k for someone to rob you. Please make sure you are properly insured and after the heist, I will sell some of it back to you for a fair price. I wil let you know when you need to leave the house.
Who made the first pipe on the top of your latest post showing pics?
