I might add that the current hipster phenom seems related to this cultural development:

Great book, by the way. Funny and insightful, without political venom.

like buying a new Twitter-connected refrigerator just because your neighbors did.
I would never buy a Twitter connected refrigerator... then the world would know how much beer I drink. 8O

.. or for that matter with cobs or Penzance.

Yet, it's a Cob being smoked in your avatar. Interesting. :puffy:
Oh, I have no problem with cobs I have a problem folks who insist they are better than sliced bread and get offended with someone who doesn't agree. I don't have a problem most folks/fads/etc.. as long as they don't spend time trying to 'convert' me then get offended when I don't.

Unfortunately, that creates a paradox.
"We cannot agree what's right" is a variant of "We must agree what is right."

I don't agree or disagree.. I'm offended by being drafted into the game. I'm done with this dead horse thread.

Aha. I just got it. I thought we were beating a dead horse; it turns out we're merely beating the only horse we're allowed to beat. Living in a stilted, smothered, politically-correct Leftist Progressive cult of a society, almost every one and every thing is on our post-1984 "do not criticize" list. Hipsters have not made it yet. Perhaps if they come up with a reason to insinuate themselves into the women's bathroom to peek at my daughter, they will make the "do not criticize" list.

The current version of hipster seems different from the last time around.

Oddly, DW, it appeared we both had come down on the "why are we bashing on hipsters, again?" side of the fence. I'm starting to think they're just a target of opportunity, as I mentioned, standing in for unavailable targets.

So, maybe it's that the part of humanity within us that used to enjoy dragging people off of buses in Birmingham and Selma that is "different" from us and beating them unreccognizably, just needs someone to beat up on. I've been wondering what was meant when someone yearned for anti-PCness. So, hipsters are the new scape goats for us to beat on unmercifully? Hmmm... I guess it's better than fag-bashing of the 80's, or lynchings that happened all through my childhood. All of the other forms of belittling someone else has a negative "ism" associated with it that is unattractive to wear. So...
Maybe there's always going to be a need for men with small penises to vent their frustrations on something smaller than them to make them feel good about themselves. :puffy:

I think you picked up on the thread of my thoughts exactly, Cosmic. "We gotta have somebody to bash, who can we bash without getting into massive amounts of trouble?"

PC is pernicious, and it's not the thing that makes people civil toward each other; civility is what does that. PC is a different animal, to my mind, and it says "one man's feelings are more important than another man's right to thought". At any rate, there may not be a need for men with small penises to vent their frustrations, but there's always going to be a large supply of them.

Classifying a group and then critiquing it is a great way to pass the time. I especially like watching people and making up "back stories" to fit my observations. Or creating a "personality" when someone obviously demands such by dress, posture, vehicle, or whatever. Good lord knows how many "war heroes" I've created who, in actuality, had just recently fallen down the stairs.
An old buddy and I used to sit and play "What breed?" Pick a subject walking down the street and then assign them a breed based on gait, dress, build, haircut, visage and posture. There are a lot of "junkyard dogs" ambling around out there.
