This hipster thread has way more clout by number of posts than most pipe and tobacco subjects, by far. Maybe the 'net needs a Hipster Forum.

I never knew there was such a creature prior to joining this forum, but now Drudge has this:
Brooklyn hipsters demanding bar owners show Dem debate...

http://nypost.com/2016/04/14/brooklyn-hipsters-demanding-bar-owners-show-dem-debate/
Since Drudge drives so much of the news, it appears that hipsters are coming out.

Im with ya Jackswilling. I never even knew this was a thing. I must have just thought that guys wearing this stuff was just a kid thing. Now, I'm intrigued. Irony and artsy? Still just seems like a bunch of kids choosing to look different. I'm not sure why it musters up so much anger. I don't remember folks getting this bent when they were wearing black makeup and trench coats back in the 90's, but I wasn't on forums back then.
One thing about these posts is that it has taught me bunches of stuff about these guys, but really nothing really negative, just trendy, IMO.

I was. People did not get that bent out of shape because of the lack of perceived insincerity, at least until the trend took off.
Then there were statements like this: "No Core / No Trends / No Mosh / No Fun."
Hipsters are hated because they are insincere. Not because of what they wear.

To teenagers and subculture members, identity is important: it conveys a viewpoint, even if vague, such as that which heavy metal conveys (summary: your morality is wrong, your society is ruled by the weak, adult life is boring because it is obedient, the response is naturalistic rebellion).
Hipsters take that identity and invert it. Its meaning is removed: now it means "I do this to look hip, like stupid movies use having a bottle of Jack Daniels and a Harley to signal rebellion." The external no longer reflects the internal, but is used as a substitute for having something there.
Like all fake things -- fast food, Budweiser, aros (yeagh!), televangelists, politicians -- it is detestable to those who have joined subcultures out of a need for and belief in something other than the dominant culture.
It's why both punk and metal were so defensive against entryists -- bourgeois kids and poseurs, respectively -- as were groups like hackers. They are defending the integrity of their ideas against assimilation by the wider and less sincere Herd.

Someone's probably already touched on this in this lengthy thread, but I wonder how the second cousin of the hipster, the Bohemian (of which we academics and writers fit in) would be tolerated?

So, they don't "hate(?)" the rest of us who just do our own thing in this "square(?)" world as much as those who really "hate(?)" us squares? If my (")'s are close, then I don't see the problem. I spent 12 years in academia as a student then professor, around art majors, theater majors, music majors, business majors, hicks, hoodlums, punks, hippies, preps, frats, etc... and, I've always found that all of us are really just the same. Being in the arts, I tend to look past our costumes, and try to see the person. I really just think that poser, insincere, or passionate, we really all just want to be recognized as having some value.
Help me out here. I may be wrong, but unless they are strapping bombs on themselves and trying to kill us, I don't see how someone's subcultural doctrine is going to affect me.

Yeah. It's not about the costume. It's about the intent.
Do they hate us? No... but they do look down on us.
The classic hipster move is to, when you talk about your favorite band, bring up some band that put out only 40 copies (on cassette) of its album that is "the most real ever, totally off the chain" and if you haven't heard of it, you're a second-class citizen.
Here are some metal hipsters:

I think we are over analyzing a behavior, trying to understand it in our terms. Kids and young adults do most of their acting out simply because it's fun and it irritates the older generation. Everyone has to have a label and fit into some convenient cubby. Adults see new behavior, fail to understand it, label it and then either deride or take it too seriously. I think for the vast majority of "hipsters", they are simply enjoying themselves, they don't over think it, they simply go with the breeze or whimsy and . . . have a bit of fun.
I suspect they also bask in the attention they get. They get it! We don't and so have to analyze it, figure out what's wrong with them.
